I thought that since there a several active threads going where people are discussing TV, TV shows, and such, I start a new thread.

I've copied the comments I made about Showtime's Dexter as a start.

I love Dexter -- which really surprised me because I thought the whole premise behind the show would put me off. I only decided to rent the DVD for the show because there was so much positive talk about the show. I'm glad I did. This has to be one of the best written show. And, except for the whole killing thing -- blood stains are such a pain to get out, I could identify with Dexter in some ways. I doubt that I am the only person who has felt like Dexter -- that we are somehow different from everyone else, that it feels like we are the only ones "acting" our way through life while everyone is doing "it" for real.

I just did it because I don't want one of the mods to come after me. They scare me when they get angry. :(( :((

I thought I'd re post some links to Amazon Instant Video for some of the shows I've seen discussed. Note, that many of there videos can be seen for free if you are an Amazon Prime member. I don't work for Amazon. I just think that free access to so many get shows is information worth passing on. I have watched a number of shows and have enjoyed them.

Classic Doctor Who (access shows as far back as 1964) Classic Doctor Who at Amazon Instant Video

Torchwood Torchwood at Amazon Instant Video

Downton Abbey Downton Abbey at Amazon Instant Videos

BBC Shows BBC at Amazon Instant Video

BBC America BBC America at Amazon Instant Videos

PBS Shows PBS Shows at Amazon Instant Video

I hope you enjoy these. I also hope that others add links to shows they think are worth sharing.

When I first looked at the shows available at Amazon, I was surprised. In the months since, it's only gotten better and better. I originally signed up for Amazon Prime because of the shipping. And I felt I more than got my money's worth for that. But now that I can watch some of my favorite shows and movies for free, borrow books for my kindle, I'm amazed epecially when I've had nothing but great service as well.

I'm sure there are other sites like Hulu where one can watch the shows they like for a lot less than cable and other pay TV options. I hope we can add to the list I started so we have more options -- especially when it comes to watching what I consider quality TV. While it is true that much of TV is a waste land, there is a lot of good TV and some really great documentaries that make learning fun and enjoyable.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with shows that are strictly gullty pleasures. I have more than a few of those. :D :D

I'm sure going to miss "The Closer" after it finishes its run in the summer. But I'm looking forward to the spinoff, "Major Crimes", with Mary McDonnell as Captain Raydor.

Damn, I barely got out of Amazon for like $70 bucks. 5-8 days shipping, six items. Kris Kristofferson, Leonard Cohen, Willie Nelson mostly. I didn't see the value from here of signing up for a yearly $79 membership. Or maybe I was just feeling tapped out.

I check out Amazon's daily deals -- every day. Now that I have a kindle, I check out the kindle daily deals as well. Many of the deals I buy don't cost much -- many are less that the $25 minimum you need to buy to get free shipping -- partly because I only buy them if it's something I'm looking for or a great book of DVD and the price is really great. I usually make a number of these buys a month. I also buy a lot of my supplements and vitamins on line since I can get them cheaper, don't pay taxes and with the Prime, shipping is free. The savings in shipping add up quickly -- much quicker that I thought when I did the trial month.

I've "borrow" a number of kindle books as an Amazon Prime member and so far since December when I got my kindle, I've had free access to $40 or $50 dollars worth of books. And that doesn't count the Amazon Instant videos I've watched for free. I love old movies and TV shows and Amazon Instant has a surprisingly big selection. Big enough that I easily have 300 free movies and old-time TV shows on my waiting list. So for me, I'm making out on the deal. It doesn't hurt that I earn Amazon gift cards/points with my credit card purchases. Since I pay for almost everything by credit card which I pay off at the end of the month I earn lots of dollars to use at Amazon. I used some of them to buy my kindle and my Tivo -- which I got for almost 80% off because I bought it when it was a Gold deal item so it was 50% off and I got during a "lightning deal" when the price was dropped even lower but only for a very short time. Amazon's doing this during the holiday seasons for a number of years and I have gotten some really great deals on electronic, DVD sets, jewelry. I never would have both the Tivo if the price hadn't been so incredibly cheap. I think it was around $60.

For me, Amazon Prime works because I buy a lot from Amazon, I watch the free videos (I don't have cable or Netflix so I really save a bundle) and read the free kindle books. If you don't buy a lot -- especially a lot of low cost items, have a kindle or have other ways to get your videos, then Prime isn't for you. For me, Amazon is a way to save money because if I go to the store to buy vitamins, I end up buying other things -- I'm like a dog that is easily distracted by a passing squirrel -- only with me it's magazines, food I shouldn't eat, etc.

MajorBabs, you're reading my mind, again! I just got a Kindle for Christmas, and am finishing my free month of Amazon Prime. I started an Amazon Prime thread to ask folks if they feel that their Prime membership is worth the $.

MB, could you cut and paste your above post in the Amazon Prime thread? ;;) ;;) ;;)

How would I put the videos on my TV? I'm not a Netflix person anymore -- wasn't watching enough. But W2 still has enough vision to read paper books so the shipping would work out.

About Dexter: The only comments I would have about any episode would be, "OMG, could you believe that?!". I agree the Trinity Killer season of Dexter with John Lithgow was some of the best TV supense/thriller ever. I love Lt Debra Morgan for her creative uses of the f word.

You should be able to use a streaming player like Roku to play things like Youtube, Amazon Instant video from your computer on your TV. I just bought a Roku to do this, but I have to do a few things first to my computer to set it up. LM K mentioned she has a Roku so we to get her to share her experiences with it.

I can do that -- BUT there will be a price.    You are going to have to share info on your Roku, like did you set it up yourself, do you use it to stream stuff directly from your computer, etc.  :mememe: :mememe:

That's because I didn't think about them, partly because I've never watched them. (They are buried in with the HBO) But because I'm easy (but not cheap). Also, since I try to do one good deed a day (and I try to find ones that I can do that won't result in me in pain, dying or spending lots of money), I'll consider this my good deed for today. Thank doG I've got that out of the way so that if I see a runaway car with a child inside later today, I won't feel the need to try to stop it as part of doing my daily good deed.   :

Try these: HBO Rome

Deadwood

Showtime Shows and Series

I only did a quick check but it appears that you can't watch HBO or Showtime show fro free as an Amazon Prime Member. These links still may be useful since LM K mentioned the Netflix no longer carries HBO shows. I don't know about Showtime.

I still may have you share info on Roku, but I just noticed that Amazon has an easy "how-to" for connecting Amazon Instant Prime to your TV using Roku or similar products. I noticed it when I was making links to Rome and Deadwood episodes. I love it when I get almost instant rewards for doing a good deed.
