Thanks Tollie. Normally I would think soybeans as a cause would be a major stretch. Doctors still believe tofu and soymilk can help reduce the instance of inflammation leading to certain cancers.

She has had major respiratory problems the past several years.

I can't remember where I saw the post but it mentioned Chagas as a disease that could be spreading to the US as one of the results of climatic changes. It said the US had its first reported case just recently. It didn't sound quite right. I am pretty sure I saw a homeless man with the disease and he described the bugs that were attacking him at night which fit the description of the vectors (kissing bugs of the Triatomine family).

Most people here are not aware of this disease, so they don''t recognize it or the vectors. There have been quite a few reported cases such as this one in Tennessee. There have been others in Texas and California.

The CDC distinguishes between cases acquired outside the U.S. and those acquired here. We do have domestic cases:
Quote:
By applying published seroprevalence figures to immigrant populations, CDC estimates that more than 300,000 persons with Trypanosoma cruzi infection live in the United States. Most people with Chagas disease in the United States acquired their infections in endemic countries. Although there are triatomine bugs in the U.S. , only rare vectorborne cases of Chagas disease have been documented.

This is the current distribution of the bug:

if you find a triatomine bug, take it to your local extension service. Don't smush it.

This is one of those diseases for which prompt treatment is needed. As it is a "neglected" parasitic disease in the U.S., the physician may require education. Many universities with medical schools have tropical disease clinics.

The Paralympics are going on right now and this is a great piece from The Guardian about active programs that are identifying wounded warriors in the UK and singling them out for paralympic training.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/au ... CMP=twt_gu

If nothing else it is evidence of how well the Wounded Warriors are treated in the UK. When they leave the rehab facilities they often leave with four or five pairs of "legs" one for every day, one for running, one for swimming, etc. I have to say that I am proud of the way my country is looking after its wounded vets.

Yes, we do have domestic cases of Chagas and their kissing bug vectors. I just had to look up this word:

autochthonous

which is about the same as 'native born.'

Okay, I’m having a ridiculous debate with a friend of mine who is an unemployed gay female who has been job hunting (unsuccessfully for 3 months) who for some reason “likes” Mitt Romney AND Paul Ryan AND Fawx News AND refuses to listen to anything else. WTF? ](*,) :horse:

Plus my friggin foot still hurts from falling off the latter while ago while trying to hack back out of control wisteria that is trying to swallow the entire property whole. :((

Plus there are (seemingly) gallons of water on the carpet in my bedroom that came from fucking nowhere, but there they are! So much water that it goes “squish” through your toes when you step on it. WTF again? ](*,)

But I did save a beautiful butterfly today when I was about to die from heat stroke from fighting the wisteria and jumped in the pool. I saw it floating when I swam by and thought ahhh. But on the way back I saw one little wing trying to flicker a bit. I scooped it out, (not with my hand, I don’t touch bugs) and set it down on what’s left of the hacked up wisteria. It climbed up with difficulty and when I went back a bit later it was still there, wings fluffed up and looking much better. It turned and walked back up the leaf and just stood there and looked at me. I think it was saying thank you. ;;)

I’ll bet he doesn’t get close to the pool again! I wish I could say the same for my friend and Fawx news!

I think it’s “Beer:30”, I’m done for the day!

Omg, there is a helicopter hovering over my house! That's kind of freaky. Cats could not care less, however.

Hey, cool. Thanks! (the arrow key thing, not the drag and drop)

cool!

Keep pressing arrows and it disappears altogether

This happened to me - it was leaking from the air conditioner. The tray that is supposed to catch the condensate was cracked.

What version of Windows?

Tried it with Windows 7 and nothing happened.

Windows 7 Professional v.6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601

Not sure why it doesn't work for you, Ducky. Did you try dragging the title bar too? Actually, for me that only works if you drag it to the left. I have two monitors on this machine, and Mouse Without Borders so I can control my little Asus netbook too also. Moving to the right, my cursor goes across three screens, but of course you can't drag a window from the big box to the netbook.

I am not sure what you mean by title bar. Is that the same as menu bar or address bar? The Windows key and left/right arrrows work, but none of my toolbars will allow dragging.

I ran across this picture today and I just think it is incredibly cool. The picture is from an open air exhibition in Amsterdam.

This is from the annual weigh-in at the London Zoo. There are many more photos where this came from.

This is a very beautiful cemetery in Brooklyn. I hope they catch who did this. It's probably kids, though, and I don't want them in jail, but they should be sentenced to learning about and cleaning up historic or abandoned cemeteries around the city for at least a year.

CBS

Quote:
Vandals cause more than $100K in damages at historic New York cemetery

(CBS News) A historic New York City cemetery has been vandalized by what cemetery officials are describing as "a very sick individual or individuals," causing more than $100,000 in damages.

Green-Wood Cemetery officials announced that 43 memorials had been knocked over or defaced. About 90 staff members who were working on the cemetery grounds discovered the damage on Tuesday morning.

"Most of the damaged monuments date back to the 1800s. Many cannot be replaced," Richard J. Moylan said to CBS Station WCBS in New York.

Many monuments broke into pieces after being toppled including an arch and several urns, according to WCBS. One of the oldest memorials that was vandalized belonged to a general from the War of 1812. Four marble crosses had been pushed over, and three of them remain in several parts. Two porcelain photographs were purposely scratched, and another was smashed. Other gravestones were smeared with mud.

Though there are constant car patrols of the grounds, mounted video cameras and a high fence that surrounds the 478-acre cemetery, a vandal or a group of vandals were able to enter the premises and topple and deface some of the monuments, Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman wrote on the official blog. One of the cameras was able to record a possible suspect. The evidence has been turned over to New York City Police Department's Hate Crimes Squad.

Ars Technica: Apple v. Samsung verdict is in - $1 billion loss for Samsung
Quote:
Apple's three utility patents, all found infringed, cover features like double-tapping to zoom and the "bounce back" technology that snaps images back into place. Apple's four design patents cover elements like the contours and shape of the iPhone.

The jury also rejected Samsung's arguments that the patents were invalid. Samsung escaped punishment on only one of Apple's patents, a design patent asserted only against two Samsung tablets.

Samsung's counterattack against Apple, using six of its own patents, went nowhere. The jury found they weren't infringed.

The jury of seven men and two women returned the verdict faster than expected, after just two and a half days of deliberations. They had to fill out a complex 20-page jury verdict form that includes hundreds of individual patent and trademark accusations against each company. Closing arguments just took place late Tuesday.

From the time involved, I imagine their first vote found them all in agreement, and the rest of the time was filling out the paperwork.

That $250 million licensing offer Apple had made Samsung must look pretty good right now.
