Growing up, my fambly had a yellow lab named Samantha. Santa brought Sam as a gift for my sister and I when I was 4.

When I was 7, the fambly moved out to the country; the real country, where there were lots and lots of farms. Our house had acres of farmland behind the house and to one side of the house. With farmland comes mice and other creatures.

Sam once "saved" my sister and I from a big ol' garter snake. (Well, big to a 9 year old.) Sam was a hero.

One night, the fambly noticed that Sam was whimpering and cowering a bit. About 8 feet away was her food dish. In the dish was one little field mouse, helping him/herself to doggie food. Sam was a wimp.

Sam was scared and confused. Of course, as loving pet owners, the entire fambly laughed quite loudly at Sam, who was then beyond confused and was really hoping that someone would take the situation as seriously as she was.

Poor puppy dog....

I still miss that dog. :xo

Situation update

I woke up freezing and missing my bed, so I said to hell with it and wandered into my bedroom. I found that one of the traps had tiggered but the tlittle fucker had stolen the bait :(( So I tried to sleep but listening to the little shit scrabbling around drove me nuts. So I reset the trap with penut bitter and Ive left it near where I heard the bastard scrabbling ( it went into my heater for some reason)

So. what can I say the end result is that I fed it. I'm hoping that it dies of old age at some point.

Dear Diary,

Day Six without internet.

After five hours on the phone with tech support on Saturday, they said my DSL modem was dead.

Decided it was time for a change and switched both phone and internet to cable.

Hooked it up Tuesday. After 30 minutes on the phone with tech support...no joy.

Figured it was the network card.

At least the phone got hooked up and working yesterday.

Got a USB network adapter today and installed it and the drivers. Went to call and see if I could get online, and...

...the phone line was dead.

30 minutes and many resets and reprovisionings later, it still wasn't working.

A tech is coming out Sunday to try and get both up and running.

Thank GAWD I've got lots of booze in the house.

And my smartphone. But posting with it sucks!

Put some more cheese on the mouse trap and leave the little bugger some wine in a small bowl. Even if the trap doesn't catch him, if you leave him enough wine he'll get drunk and you both can get some sleep.

Plus you can laugh at him tomorrow when he discovers what a hangover is. Be certain to play loud music or have the television volume cranked up.

I saw a mouse pop his head out from under one of my stove burners a few years back. I pulled up the top, but he'd retreated. Without options, I turned the [electric] oven on high heat.

Heard some chaotic movements in there, and a few minutes later quiet. I had two baked mice.

Stunk like hell - but effective!

Truer words were never spoke. Sometimes one miserable mouse (or rat) can cause a lot of damage. And when you catch it, and the droppings and chewing stop you wait for a long time for more and it never happens. (I am surrounded by wild critters in my aerie at FEMA Camp 17.)

Suranis -- a suggestion -- put the traps up against the walls and in corners in dark places and cupboards and closets.

And set the trap trigger lightly. If you haven't snapped your thumb at least twice whilst setting the trap, you don't have the trigger set lightly enough.

Oh, I have! Rye old fashioneds are the cocktail du jour Chez Tav this evening. ;)

ETA: I had a pet rat as a kid and if I ever decided to get a caged pet again, it would be a rat. Very affectionate and smart.

Ironically, she died of cancer.

On mousetraps:

There is another kind of trap that is humane (doesn't kill the mouse) and also is pretty hard for the mouse to escape from.

I've used a mouse cube with some success before -- see: http://www.amazon.com/Mice-Cube-Pk-Reus ... 000WB13QC/

And now there seems to be a new very inexpensive product available:
http://www.amazon.com/Kness-Tip-Trap-10 ... 00004RA4G/

Basically you bait the trap by putting the very yummy food all the way inside. The mouse runs in & is trapped & can't get back out.

But it's very easy for humans to open the thing. I happen to live near an open reserve, so it's easy for me to deliver unwanted, living rodents back to the wild. Probably not for long, as the reserve is also home to raptors & ravens, but I've never had a mouse come back.

Even if you don't feel sorry for the little critter, these things are just cleaner You never have to actually touch the mouse, dead or alive.

It's actually been years since I've had a mouse issue. I used to have a fairly regular issue with rats. However, no signs of rodents in the past couple of years since the two terriers moved in with me.

Hey, good news, Suranis! The mouse probably didn't come in an open door or window! And he is not an only mouse (or she). Your plan needs a Part 2, I believe.

Much sympathy.

A guarantee to see a huge, scary, black fruit rat: leave your toilet seat up with the air conditioning turned off for 3+ days in summer in Palm Springs. You may have heard the screech that went round the world last August when I discovered this fact of life in the desert ... i jumped on the sofa just like on TV and screamed loud enough to be heard in South America. Six inches long at least with a long, long, long wiggly tail following his robust body along the floor. I think after days of freedom in the house, he was as surprised to see me as I was to see him. (or her.) The exterminator who came that night at very expensive off-hour rates -- and though he could barely understand me when I called babbling hysterically -- told me there were no others in the house, nothing in the crawl space attic, no places of entry at all. Just remember to shut the toilet seat before going back to L.A. for the week. Truly! Ewwwww!

Getting close to Derby time. I have decided to go with Gemologist since the track is probably going to be muddy and his dam sire was the great Mr. Prospector. Also like Bodemeister , Went the Day Well and Take Charge Indy on a wet track. With 20 horses, a lot of it is who gets out of the gate well and avoids getting bumped and is lucky enough to not getting stuck behind horses with no running room. As of this morning, Union Rags was made the favorite although Bodemeister was the Morning Line favorite. In other words, it's a wide open race.

After cashing an imaginary place bet on Bodemeister, I was down about 12 imaginary dollars. :D

I got a bit of a thrill when they started talking about the horse that was shipped to KY to accompany I'll Have Another and to be his pony (the senior horse that escorts the runner to the gate to keep him calm). His pony is a well-known retired champion, Lava Man. Because he was a gelding, he raced longer than most champion horses and won purses over $5million. He was retired because of bone chips in his ankles. But he is also known for the experimental medical treatments he received with stem cells that has been a breakthrough and is now being tried on humans to regenerate cartilage and tendons.

After his treatments, he went back into training and ran in a stakes race. His owners retired him again as they said they would if he could not continue as a stakes winner. No sliding down the ladder for him. Doug O'Neill, his trainer and also the trainer of today's winner liked having him around the barn because of his personality and said then he would consider a new job for him as a pony. And there he was today, escorting the about to be winner to the gate.

http://www.alamopintado.com/news/2009/0 ... racehorse/

Good job, Lava Man!
