Boston Herald Springfield man arrested after alleged ear-biting attack on coach
Quote:
Springfield police have arrested a man they say punched and bit off part of the ear of a coach after a youth basketball game.

Police say the man attacked the winning coach as the Catholic Youth Organization teams of fifth- and sixth-graders shook hands at the end of the game Friday night at the Holy Name school. They said the coach needed treatment to reattach part of his ear.

Authorities identified the alleged attacker Monday as 34-year-old Timothy Lee Forbes of Springfield, the losing team’s assistant coach. His lawyer Philip Lauro said Forbes pleaded not guilty and will have a dangerousness hearing Friday, when he’ll seek bail.

Lauro said his client coached last year for the same team as the man he’s accused of assaulting.

Several other buggies fled the scene
Quote:
Authorities in western New York say they've charged four young Amish adults with illegal possession of alcohol after their buggy collided with a police car responding to a report of a drinking party under way.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office tells media outlets that the crash occurred around 7:15 Sunday in the rural town of Sherman, near the Pennsylvania border in New York's southwest corner.

Officials say deputies were responding to reports that people were drinking in several Amish buggies on a country road.

As a patrol car arrived on the scene, one of the Amish buggies changed lanes, colliding with the police vehicle. The buggy flipped onto its side, causing minor injuries to one of the people on board.

From the NYDailyNews - The collision also caused the horse to break free of the carriage, and it ran into a nearby barn, the newspaper said.

Interestingly, not driving while intoxicated. Perhaps it's only DWI if the horse is also drunk.

The article may be wrong in identifying these teenagers as Amish. They were probably the children of Amish parents but not yet members of their church. Most of the Old Order Amish mandate a waiting period before youth may be baptized into the church. Around age 16, youth (especially boys) are encouraged to test whether or not they wish to adopt the rigorous Amish way of life. While this period, called Rumspringa, is not nearly as wild as depicted in movies, it is nevertheless a time to experiment with living the "English" way of life, which often involves alcohol and sometimes involves hard drugs.

The result is, ideally, that adult Amish have chosen to become Amish, not been forced by their parents into the church. The reality is that parental influences are strong, even in urbanized communities. Nevertheless, the use of alcohol and drugs by the youth has become a serious enough problem to warrant establishing rehab centers specifically for the youth of Amish communities. The traditional 5 square feet of an Amish window brought them into conflict with the mandate for 5.7 sq. feet.

I have always admired this aspect of the Amish religion: it is a choice, not an assumption. I can imagine that without Rumspringa, Amish adults might be more "tempted" by the outside world. For many decades, the youth have explored some of the outside world and have chosen the stability of Amish families and the Amish community. It is, however, possible that this stability is now seriously threatened by the epidemic of drug use in their communities. It is also possible that it is increasingly difficult to live a traditional Amish life in the modern world. Even such a small thing as a fire code mandated change in the size of windows challenges the Amish way of life.

Not everybody loves the star architect Frank Gehry's winning design for the Eisenhower Memorial in Washington.

National Civic Art Society The Gehry Towers Over Eisenhower

Eisenhower Family letter Jan. 9, 2012
Quote:
The Eisenhower family is requesting an indefinite delay in the design approval and ground breaking–pending further discussions with the family significantly changing the concept, scale and scope of the memorial.

No need to worry: Congressman Issa is investigating.

A small number of drugs in the U.S. experience a shortage in any given year, but the number of reported prescription drug shortages in the United States nearly tripled between 2005 and 2010. While FDA successfully prevented 137 drug shortages between January 1, 2010 and September 26, 2011, prescription drug shortages continue to threaten the health and safety of the American people.

Every week, I receive an email from our pharmacy director telling us that there is yet another medication unavailable or in short supply, and listing the "approved" uses for what little we may have. I replied to the last one by asking that they simply tell us what they DO have in stock, as the list would be far shorter and easier to recall.

The latest email listed as unavailable valium, ativan, and versed ... and suggested we find another medication to use as a sedative. And what would that be, pray tell? Monitored units and palliative care are now using propofol (think Micheal Jackson) in place of the above, but other floors are just SOL. Not that it matters; word is that our stock of propofol is falling short, too.

For going on a year now, we've been out of (or have had severely limited quantities) of analgesics such as morphine, dilaudid and fentanyl, even toradol ... one email suggested we use pain relieving "alternatives" such as imagery and diversion, and then they did approve use of IV tylenol (limited to 24 hours). Whoopty-do. Lidocaine is out ... only certain procedures in ER are approved; suggestions for alternatives included using a "freeze" spray for minor suturing and the like. The email this week added atropine, valium, fentanyl, kytril, lidocaine, ativan, magnesium, mannitol, reglan, lopressor, versed, morphine, TPN --- including separate mineral and fat infusions, zofran and nystatin oral liquid, benadryl. Remaining in short (or no) supply are various antibiotics and a number of cancer chemotherapy drugs.

I know of a number of patients who have had their admissions for chemo cancelled because of this, and I'm seeing those who DO manage to get treated are having side effects that could be controlled if only we had these drugs available.

It's absolutely ridiculous. Sure, over the course of my career in the last 29 years I've seen shortages here and there, but nothing to this extent, and of those shortages that did occur, they were resolved rather quickly. I feel like I'm working in a third-world country. And I have to say (putting on my tinfoil hat), I do think the passage of the healthcare bill has a lot to do with this. It's just too much of a coincidence that we're seeing this happen at this level since the bill passed. I really wish the USAG would investigate the true source behind this issue. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that these companies are working in concert to create these "shortages".

I almost always use 22/7 :o , to calculate tank or silo volumes. You can do it in your head when you're in the field. Sometimes 3.1416 when more precision needed, which isn't often with small diameters and when you build things in even numbers anyway. I do like pie though and pi.

GOP candidates (not of the presidential variety):

Roger Williams, former Secretary of State of Texas, is now running for a Republican Congressional seat from Texas. In this inane video he "tries to talk to the leadership of the Democratic Party," asserting that years ago we did not have this problem. This is likely to play well in Texas.

BBC News March 14, 2012 Tide detergent thefts 'funds US drug habits'
Quote:
Thieves target Tide, a leading laundry liquid, because large bottles - which cost some $20 (£13) legally - have become a black market currency.

Shop workers are increasing security measures around their stocks of Tide.

In Washington DC, local branches of the nationwide pharmacy chain CVS have attached anti-theft tags to bottles.

One branch in the Dupont Circle area of the city keeps the the bottles locked up behind glass, the Associated Press reported.

When I read this report of what is being called a "grime wave," I went to check that the door into the laundry room from the garage was securely locked. I also posted the watch cats at the door.

It is unknown why Tide -- not All, Era, or the rest -- has suddenly become a currency preferable to the greenback. Maybe someone has found an ingredient in Tide that, like the pseudoephedrine in original Sudafed, can become a street drug. Could this account for why my housekeeper washes laundry at every opportunity?

Yoo Hoo! Crafty Ladies! My new project well, it's really a been sitting in the yarn queue for months project. I made a small version of the throw as a baby gift for my niece. The colors matched her nursery. I decided to make one for my office/craft room with a pillow to match. Super-easy pattern goes super-fast.

And for the knitters, here's an idea for those Christmas gift cards. I'm going to double the width and knit on two double-ended needles like a sock so I have to sew only the bottom.
