The coronation was in 1661 and Van Dyck died in 1641. So, it was not Van Dyck even though Charles II was still paying off his father's debts to the Van Dyck family.

Oh I agree - definately not Van Dyke Charles was just a young boy when Van Dyke died.

Remember Charles was 30 years old when he came to the crown. He looks much younger in this portrait. The coronation portrait of him make him look several years older to me. This is so much fun.I would really like to know who the artist is. If it's not Van Dyck then maybe Lely.

OK

Artist not known - British (English) School c1660 to 1670 (Personally I'd put it the latter part of that range but I'm no expert)

Thanks WD! I think it is earlier . There is a Lely portrait done in 1675 in which Charles look very old. He has deep lines in his brow, bags under the eyes and he looks positively exhausted.

Too bad the artist is unknown. Wonder if Lely was jealous of this artist's talent and refused to put his name on it. Lely was the official court painter by then.

Excellent find! I'm looking at the collar (the thing with the gold links). Not much is showing, but doesn't look like the Order of the Garter.

Also the hands aren't the best, so I'm guessing a lesser artist or a copy. Hmmm... is that house the Daisy house?

Yep, big ole cool but creepy house. Not that any of our branch of the Daisys ever lived there.

That was a cool find WD. Wonder how come no one knew who it was when we visited. :-k Maybe I just didn't ask the right person.

In the midst of this erudite discussion of Charles II and that painting, some trash:

Romaine lettuce recall: E. coli contamination
Quote:
The lettuce is sold in nine-ounce, 9.25-, 10-, 10.25- and 16-ounce bags under the labels Ready Pac, Trader Joe's, Safeway and Dining in Classic, says CBS station KPIX in San Francisco.

The company said some 2,095 cases were potentially affected. Of those, 1,969 cases were shipped to Puerto Rico and the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington. [Canada is not mentioned, although the Canadian Food Inspection Agency first detected it.]

Cantaloupes contaminated with salmonella [not listeria like last year]
Quote:
The outbreak, announced Friday, has been linked to an unidentified supplier in southwestern Indiana and has so far caused two deaths and 141 illnesses across 20 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The hardest hit state has been Kentucky, where 50 people have fallen ill and both deaths occurred.

Exploding Toilet Recall
Quote:
If your toilet was made by American Standard, Crane, Eljer, Gerber, Kohler, Mansfield or St. Thomas between the years of 1997 to 2008, there's a good chance that you could be sitting on a time bomb!

A massive recall is in effect for a pressure assisted flushing mechanism made by Flushmate, and installed in what sounds like every toilet known to man!

The problem stems from built-up pressure in the tank and when the toilet blows...

it can literally rip you a new one. About 2.3 million U.S. potties are affected and there are already 304 reported cases of bursting toilets, with 14 people recieving [sic] impact or laceration injuries.

Always trying to be helpful.

Augusta National Adds First Female Members
David Taintor 11:06 AM EDT, Monday August 20, 2012

Quote:
The Associated Press reports:

For the first time in its 80-year history, Augusta National Golf Club has female members.

The home of the Masters, under increasing criticism the last decade because of its all-male membership, invited former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore to become the first women in green jackets when the club opens for a new season in October.

Speculation has circulated for years that whenever (if ever) AN invited a female member it would be Condoleezza. She's an avid golfer and has played many, many rounds there over the years.

Thank you so much! As it happens, just such a device is sitting not 15 feet from my desk.

It's the right make, model, and age, but a little research shows that the serial number is out of the affected range.

But I'll remember with gratitude who it is who alerts me to the dangers of Sovereign Citizens and exploding toilets!

I remember we were at our friend's apartment in the East Village years, decades ago, when my first husband was taking a relaxed leak, gazing up at the ceiling, and he heard a squeak-squeak. Looking down he saw he was peeing on a big old rat. I have never once sat down without looking ever since. Cautious as I am, an exploding toilet never entered my mind. :o

Between this, Charles II 'waiting to ascend the throne,' Orly's Latest Poopies, and the Party Platform thread, I am feeling like the plumbing service call we had to make this morning for the basement lav was more than merely synchronicity.

Leafing through an old copy of Mendelssohn's Elijah (choral sheet music) from back when I sang, I found this doodle of mine in the margin:

Must have been drawn during rehearsal, while waiting for the altos to get their section right

Are altos in the chorus treated like violists in the orchestra? The number of viola jokes exceeds the number of {insert name of ethnicity} jokes by a couple of magnitudes.

Dunno about altos, but I agree about violas or Sousaphones.

To some extent, yes, and in fact the French word for "viola" is "alto."

Still, soprano jokes sound a lot like blonde jokes and, let's face it, no one's dumb like tenors are dumb.

We'll find out if there are any unprotected minorities left!

So they handed me a phone and had me log in to a database program. The database called me on their phone. I answered.

From that point on, all I had to do was not hang up. Every time I finished a call, I'd click "SAVE/NEXT" and the thing would call another voter. As it called, it would tell me:

  • Name of the voter
  • Party (or U for undeclared)
  • Age
  • Sex

"Hi, my name is Foggy, and I'm calling for President Obama's grass roots campaign. Have you thought about who you're going to be voting for in November?" ;;)

"Yes, I'm voting for Romney. Don't ever call this number again." ?(

"Sorry to bother you, thanks for being honest." SAVE/NEXT

"Oh yeah, I'm voting for Obama!" :-bd

"Great, can I talk you into coming down to volunteer? It's a lot of fun and there are great people here!"

"Oh, I can't get around much, I have a bad knee. But I'm definitely voting for him!"

"Well, great talking to you, and I'll put you on the list of people who may need a ride to vote." SAVE/NEXT

It was not painful at all. Amazing database program, like nothing, that you've seen before. They told me only two states get to use the program, because it's so expensive. But they're pouring resources into North Carolina, because they really believe we can win the state. How can you not want to be part of that?
