It is worrisome that your Gracie kitteh could get some of the poison your neighbors are using...

Thanks for all the canine and feline related advice but these guys, Buster and Charlotte

Image

are absolutely no help at all, and neither is my cat Niller.

NIller used to catch gophers, but got tired of Buster and Charlotte stealing them from him.

Now they just sit there and bark when they notice a gopher mound forming, which of course does nothing to keep those garden terrorist from eating all my roots.

I've heard of half-burying bottles. something about the sound. But when I googled, I came up with a bunch of stuff to try.

p.s., you should dock Buster & Charlotte and Niller's pay. Slackers.

(my darling kitteh brought me two lizards last week. I don't know what to do about that. She's an indoor kitty, but I let her out on the screened porch sometimes, and the lizards meet their fate there. )

Lizards on the screen porch are almost the equivalent of a hunting trip!

When I was exiled in FL with the caged pool and lanai, my bestest cat ever, Valerie, approved of "outside" being the lanai ... and all because of the geckos. The entire 7 months I was there was the Great Gecko Hunt. She would eat the heads (I guess that's the tasty part), and bring me the rest. Or leave them somewhere that I would step or sit on them.

I was listening to Limbaugh this afternoon on my drive to take the weedeater in for repair. After I got back in the car and was driving back to the office he went on a long, scary voiced story telling about how Obama plotted to do this and plotted to do that, and he was going to introduce gun control in his second term, and all of the other things he has been trying to do and would do, and he was a fraud and a socialist and he just wanted to control everyone. It went on for about 30 minutes.

It then occurred to me that if I was listening to that stuff for three hours every day and I BELIEVED everything that Rush told me, in those scary tones, then I'd be a complete and utter paranoid, bug-fuck crazy, drooling psychopath too. It explains a lot.

Rachel Maddow did a segment last night on how a RWNJ pro-gun blogger in Sipsey, AL helped Fox News to create the anti-Obama hysteria about his taking away everybody's gun and how the Fast and Furious was a plot to sell a lot of guns that would cause a big increase in gun violence so that the public would be compliant when everybody's guns were taken away.

She also showed how impossible it is for Fox watchers and other people to even begin to discuss the issues because the Fox watchers have been fed such a steady diet of this conspiracy theory for over a year while the rest of us are kinda wondering what all the fuss is about.

Indeed, as far as perceptions and beliefs based on the news, the public is dramatically divided and live on different planets.

I haven't been able to watch Maddow. But, yeah, Mike Vanderboegh is being credited with beating the drum for the Fast & Furious stuff.

His blog is the Sipsey Street Irregulars.

Some background on him:

I don't like him.

Restored the old chat. It only crashes when there are 30 people or more in there, and it's a better chat.

Will you disable it on big news days so it doesn't crash the forum? Pretty please ;;) ;;)

Thanks for all the stuff you're doing! I think I missed a downtime today because I was off in Bethesda losing games of scrabble. But I checked in once and it said NO WAY. I guess that's when you were fiddling :)

Yes'm. Also, I installed a new chat that may work a lot better because it uses only the forum software, not anybody's third-party stuff.

You can see it at the bottom of the Index, or at mchat.php

Let's see how it works. I don't know if it has private rooms like the AJAX Chat. Prob'ly keep both (and the alternative chat) and disable the AJAX on big news days.

Too dark! Why do Web designers use black type on a dark background?

EVERYBODY who looks sees that at first. Then they tweak it around some and tell me how great it is.

Keep trying. ;;)

It's NOT dark. It's not displaying correctly for most people AT FIRST, but if you logout/login/try some other things, most people eventually do see it correctly. Pretty Hektor said it's purty; kate520 called it beauty.

Any minute now, some computer genius like Mr. Johnson is going to explain what needs to be done so everybody can see it right the first time.

That would be good. It is strange that the default seems to be dark until fixed.

Where this really bugs me is in PowerPoint presentations. No "tweaks" are possible there. One of the worst possible experiences is sitting in a semi-dark conference room listening to a speaker who has turned his back to the audience for the entire session and is reading off almost unreadable slides (either too dark or 10-point type or both). That is where I think cream pies are in order.

Oh, so you've sat through a Microsoft technical conference, too.

Seriously, it's bad enough when someone unused to PowerPoint does that. But about 18 months ago, I went to a conference for their TV developers, and they had a 1-hour FAQ presentation by a pair of their Indian contractors, whose accents were understandable only to them and who obviously had never taken a run-through of their PowerPoint in front of anyone else. Inexcusable, especially when it is (1) their software, and (2) they were charging significant $$ (in addition to our time and travel expenses) to mumble at us over unreadable slides.

They probably had about 20 people in the audience by the time they ended, and I was not one of them.
