Commentary in a Norwegian newspaper (Dagbladet). I translated it from Norwegian:

Behring Breivik is a Multicultural
Anders Behring Breivik can look himself in the mirror and see the result of multiethnicity and multiculturalism through generations. His Aryan ancestors and foremothers immigrated from Iran (Iran means the land of the Aryans) and India, and brought their Indo-European language and culture. His blonde hair, if it is real, comes from the Baltics. His Christian faith immigrated, as you know, from the Middle East and replaced the more traditional beliefs in Odin and his fellow Norse gods. His food habits come from all over the world, in the same way as the literature he reads and the music he likes.

Enjoying life may be typical of Norwegians, but if he enjoys a nice three-course dinner, he brings along an Arabic tradition. The Arab culture which he fights, has also given him the alphabet he used to spread his twisted beliefs. Our Greek-Latin alphabet was based on early alphabets from Egypt and the Middle East. The same culture has also given him the math that made it possible for him to make the fatal bomb. Even if Breivik has shown the world how you can misuse knowledge, he can’t deny being the result of generations of multiculturalism and multiethnicity.

Multiculturalism gives growth for mutual learning, enriching everybody involved. It is not the same as saying that multicultural encounters are not problematic. Most of us can feel the fear of the unknown, but very few will resort to extreme, violent means. This fear can be big, especially when parts of our faith-based culture and identity are being attacked. In that case, Breivik is a representative of the sad history of conflicts spanning all religions. The last few days’ pictures of pastors and imams side by side in a multicultural funeral service give us hope for a new beginning. As human kind we have a lot more in common that what separates us. And as Norwegians we will be wise to let us inspire by other cultures, so that we in the future can enjoy food, music, and literature we don’t yet know.

This has been popping up in my yahoo news Inbox and I have to admit its been causing a reaction in my something a kin to pain. I don't want to know about this guy. I don't want to know what is in head. he is a walking wound on humanity and his view is so warped its dangerous. His views should not be broadcast. let him die alone and friendless and with his voice shut down. All that broadcasting his hatred will do is ferment more hate and violence. Nothing good will come from focusing news on this monster.

He wants the news coverage; that and his manifesto may have been the primary reason for the massacre. Like many other haters, he believes that the relevant world is on his side. All he has to do is spark the fire.

I don't know to what extent the Norwegian court will deny him that. I also don't know whether the prosecution will be able to punch holes in all his lies. That could end up doing good.

It's not the prosecution's job to disprove his lies. Its their job to prove him guilty of Murder or that he was insane. That makes a trial a very bad place to punch holes in his warped logic.

One of the survivors was on the radio here (UK) yesterday saying that she hoped Breivik would be sent to a mental hospital "because he would hate that even more than prison".

I understand (but don't share) the views of those who would like to see him executed. What I would like to see is a life sentence - which I don't think is available in Norway, though I understand his sentence can be extended if he's judged to be a danger to others when he's served the initial term. A life sentence where the people caring for him and guarding him are drawn from the multicultural society he fears, where he's forced to challenge his worldview and where he's prevented from influencing other prisoners.

Agreed. It might also be the only available forum. It would be great if Norwegians and others show how insane his thinking is; this might occur in the press rather than in the courtroom.

Its protagonists, who until then had used the Internet for regular exchanges, have rushed to distance themselves from Breivik's acts. Chief among them is Fjordman, a Norwegian blogger, who until the killings had regularly exchanged ideas with Breivik and is considered to be a kind of ideological mentor to him. "It should be painfully obvious by now that Breivik does not care for anything greater than himself," the anti-Islam author wrote in his blog of the ongoing trial this week.

Although Breivik did attack in Oslo, his main thrust was at the heart of Norway: the children. Most of us consider an attack of any kind on children to be inconceivable and reprehensible (although we may accept the killing of children as "collateral damage" in war). The theft of 69 lives on Utøya Island was designed to be as cruel as possible on the sick notion that this would garner him attention. That is why this is about more than a criminal trial: it is also about combating evil ideas.

They are there to combat. For a short while, there was a neo-Nazi clothing store in Chemnitz, Germany, that was named Brevik. The similarity in names was intentional.

Thought anything remotely as well as obviously "Nazi" was outlawed in Germany. Was this changed?

I had had that impression as well. However, neo-Nazis do march in the streets, and they do wear "Nazi clothing." There is a chain that caters to them. Chemnitz is in Saxony, which has eight members of the National Democratic Party in its Parliament. I cannot discern a difference between the NDP and neo-Nazis. Wikipedia has a safely accessible article; many Google hits are to places that I would not go

This statement by some 40,000 people is the beginning of a powerful answer to the haters of the world. I think it will be more important than whatever verdict the court renders for Breivik.

The trial of Anders Breivik is over. The fate of the murderer of 77 people, most of them teenagers, will be decided by the Oslo District Court. It may send him to prison, or it may decide that Breivik is criminally insane and sentence him to long term psychiatric care. Breivik described his acts as barbarous and gruesome but claimed that they were political acts.

Breivik engaged in a monologue at the end of the trial in which he defended his actions as "preventive attacks to defend the indigenous Norwegian people." He said that he would be vindicated by history. The Associated Press article may be read here: Breivik ends massacre trial by defending attacks.

The Oslo court is now deciding whether Breivik should be imprisoned or treated for criminal insanity. I wonder if this smiling face tells us anything about the man:

Edit: The Oslo court is expected to issue its verdict on August 24.

Unfortunately, the court is obligated to follow the law.

In considering the death penalty, cases like Breivik make it a tough call. I would also find it tough to fault anyone who gunned this piece of shit down in the streets, or stomped him to death behind bars.

This person is really a human cancer, who defiles the world just by being in it. It is hard to argue we would not be better off without such a person alive. Of course, as a dead martyr, he would be just as dangerous, if not more.

All Breivik did is take the rhetoric of the RWNJs and hatemongers to its logical conclusion. He is exactly what the Gellers of the world want.
