Rep. Deutch Introduces OCCUPIED Constitutional Amendment To Ban Corporate Money In Politics

Quote:
“Deutch’s amendment, called the Outlawing Corporate Cash Undermining the Public Interest in our Elections and Democracy (OCCUPIED) Amendment, would overturn the Citizens United decision, re-establishing the right of Congress and the states to regulate campaign finance laws, and to effectively outlaw the ability of for-profit corporations to contribute to campaign spending.”

It’s about time! Any (or should I say every) republican that votes against this amendment (and I have no doubt that they will) will be smearing shit in their own faces in front of the entire country. They will confirm to all beyond a shadow of a doubt who it is that they really represent and that is NOT the voters that elected them. There will be no double-talking their way out of that one.

Do we think it will ever be brought to the floor?

When was the last time the Constitution was amended?

This is just for show. I hope it does get a lot of show, but I think that's all it is.

And, if it did somehow get further, it would be voted down as infringing on freedom of speech or something like that.

you can call me debbie downer today. :-?

still, I hope it gets a lot of people talking. And good for Deutch. He's from Florida, hardly a true blue state.

IMO this should go all the way to a vote and I hope it does but you’re probably right that it will never make it that far. The problem is that all of the parties benefit from corp cash and no one is going to want to cut off their own nose to spite their face. But it is flat wrong that corp interests are the only ones with enough money to get representation while the interests of those that are supposed to be the ones being represented are ignored.

The amendment states:

Quote:
The rights protected by the Constitution of the United States are the rights of natural persons and do not extend to for-profit corporations, limited liability companies, or other private entities established for business purposes or to promote business interests under the laws of any state, the United States, or any foreign state.”

And I agree with that 100%.

Here are the last two amendments:

Quote:
Amendment XXVI

(Ratified July 1, 1971)

The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age. Congress shall have the power to enforce this law through appropriate legislation.
Amendment XXVII

(Ratified May 5, 1992)

No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.

There have been many unsuccessful amendments proposed and some (like the flag burning and balanced budget) are reintroduced year after year.

This one has a better chance since a large percentage of real, voting citizens favor it in the polls. The Republicans may obstruct but only until they feel the heat of losing seats.
