I had a funny thought, looking over the demographics. This is the demographic (older white men) that we've become accustomed to thinking of as "advantaged." The most affluent, well-educated, and endowed with resources, safety-nets, and subordinates.
This is the group (we've been told) in all the world, with the greatest capacity to scholarship, the greatest access to research, history, reference and documentation. The greatest capacity to analyze and understand what they find. The ordained, the chosen, the most fit to rule the earth.
(You see where I'm headed here.)
And yet -- incredibly -- it is the group that has spent 2 years energetically pretending to be denser than a decade-old Christmas fruitcake. Pretending not to understand that when someone presents an official certification of birth from a state, that it means they were born in that state. Pretending not to remember that 300 million Americans, and all their forebears, grew up KNOWING that "born in the land" meant "natural born citizen," and thus "eligible to be President."
Pretending that all this pretense -- thousands of hours, millions of blog posts, tens of thousands of dollars, dozens of failed law suits -- doesn't have any particular agenda or point-of-view behind it, but is rather driven by mere "doubts," and an innocent interest in the sanctity of the Constitution. Pretending that they would have played just the same role with regard to McCain, or Bush, or Nader, or Palin, if only any of those candidates had .... had what? What essential attribute of Obama's MOST provokes, MOST excuses, this surge of "doubt"?
There is nothing, in itself, dubious about his COLB. There is no sudden historical turn, extrinsic to Obama himself, that would explain this sudden amnesia about the definition of NBC that's been taught for 100 years -- no controversy among scholars, no long-standing schism in the SCOTUS......
What could it be, other than that these guys are actually the absolute moronic bottom of the barrel, least intelligent, least capable of logical thought, most forgetful, least upstanding, least patriotic, most buffoonish candidates for village idiot of their kind?
Because the only alternative is that they are all just as canny and resourceful as their affluent white male peers, but are just plain racist xenophobes. But we know it can't be that, because they say so.
Village idiot it is.
