According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), every year, more than 200,000 children are abducted by family members. An additional 58,000 are taken by nonrelatives with primarily sexual motives. However, only 115 reported abductions represent cases in which strangers abduct and kill children, hold them for ransom, or take them with the intention to keep.
source: The FBI - Crimes Against Children Spotlight

That's a total of 258,115 child abductions per year, or a little over 700 per day average. Nearly four out of five are abductions by family members, usually over some disagreement about custody, and less than 1/20th of 1% of child abductions are the kind of criminal stranger abductions people most worry about. Anderson Cooper's analysis says that there are a total of 800,000 missing persons per year (more than 2,000 per day), with the other 540,000 being runaways and people kicked out of their homes by their families

Men photographed in crocodile trap dubbed 'idiots of the century'
Group shown swimming into a baited trap at the scene of a recent fatal attack in Queensland have been criticised

A group of men photographed swimming into a baited croc trap near the scene of a fatal attack in Queensland appear to be vying for the “idiots of the century award”, a local mayor has said.

Photos of the men swimming around and even climbing into the trap at the Port Douglas Marina have surfaced online, leaving the mayor of Douglas Shire, Julia Leu, stunned.

“I was absolutely gobsmacked, this is incredibly stupid and dangerous behaviour. I’m wondering if these fellows are vying for the idiots of the year award or the idiots of the century award,” she told ABC radio.

Awaiting Trump's coal comeback, miners reject retraining
When Mike Sylvester entered a career training center earlier this year in southwestern Pennsylvania, he found more than one hundred federally funded courses covering everything from computer programming to nursing.

He settled instead on something familiar: a coal mining course. ”I think there is a coal comeback,” said the 33-year-old son of a miner.

Trump has promised to revive coal by rolling back environmental regulations and moved to repeal Obama-era curbs on carbon emissions from power plants.

“I have a lot of faith in President Trump,” Sylvester said.
Article continues with the truly dismal numbers of people enrolling for training in new careers. They don't wanna retrain 'cuz there's no guarantee it'll help them find a job. They don't wanna work in the natural gas industry instead of coal 'cuz they'd have to move. And they're sure that coal is making a comeback.

In the meantime, large businesses aren't interested in moving to the region unless/until there's a skilled workforce there, or at least people willing to show up, take a class, and learn.

It requires no real effort aside from showing up and doing something they already know how to do. But I just betcha some of these same people also complain about those "lazy" so and so's (people of different skin color)

Neil Wolf, who we know from his support of Heather Ann Tucci provides an excellent example of the conspiracy theory echo chamber. Hell, even Alex Jones has (sorta) publicly apologized for promoting the "pizza gate" narrative but no conspiracy theory is too stupid to die in the age of social media so Neil busts out today with his admittedly unconfirmed (but it's on Youtube, so he knows it's true) breaking news, Comet Pizza's owner is supposedly under investigation from the DC police because he used his pizza shop's website to store kiddy porn.

As of this moment there isn't a single legitimate news outlet reporting this story but Neil's video is the third social media mention I've seen of this today. I fear America isn't mature enough to survive internet access.

Isn't that actionable? I mean, I know these asshats are basically judgement-proof in terms of assets, but still, an accusation of pedophilia is probably the most defamatory thing one could say.

And with all the shit that's been going down, it wouldn't surprise me if the Russian troll army or even one of our homegrown malcontents, went so far as to hack and plant something on that website, to "prove" their paranoid fantasy.

Should Hillary Clinton Be Impeached?
[Conviction following] impeachment can also bar holding a future federal office. So impeachment may not be technically moot.

But point well taken (and demonstrated).

61-year-old DIY enthusiast and stuntman “Mad” Mike Hughes is planning his first manned launch of a homemade, $20,000 steam-powered rocket with “RESEARCH FLAT EARTH” written on the side on Saturday, the Associated Press reported.

According to the AP, Hughes says he expects his new rocket to hurl him through the skies above the Mojave Desert ghost town of Amboy at up to 500 miles per hour for roughly one mile, attaining a peak altitude of 1,800 feet before it deploys two parachutes. Hughes is a proponent of the Flat Earth theory; the Research Flat Earth group is his main sponsor. Hughes does not “believe in science,” which he told the AP has “no difference” from science fiction.

“I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air, about the certain size of rocket nozzles, and thrust,” he added. “But that’s not science, that’s just a formula. There’s no difference between science and science fiction.”

“If you’re not scared to death, you’re an idiot,” Hughes, who once reassured Ars Technica that he has a high I.Q., told the AP. “It’s scary as hell, but none of us are getting out of this world alive.”

Adding to the already somewhat troubling nature of the launch, the event will simultaneously serve as the launch of Hughes’ California gubernatorial campaign (because sure, whatever). Though the AP said the event would be live-streamed on Hughes’ YouTube channel, his website says it will be “Available on Internet PPV.”

As Ars Technica noted, Hughes has done a lot of this kind of thing, winning a Guinness World Record in 2002 for jumping “102 feet in a Lincoln Town Car stretch limo.” He also survived a manned steam rocket flight in 2014, traveling 1,374 feet and earning himself three days of recovery from extreme g-forces and a rough descent, the AP wrote.

Videos of his prior test flights showed that the rockets did not explode in a cloud of steam in mid-air, which is good, but also did not exactly appear to be equipped with the latest-generation parachute technology.

Hughes certainly seems to be aware that blasting yourself into the sky is not something that most people would consider a particularly good idea, given possible outcomes like being scalded by red-hot steam or smashing into the ground at lethal speeds. But he also seems pretty determined to do this, so I guess we all owe it to him to hope for the best possible outcome.

I thought this would provide a certain amount of amusement. It made my brain hurt to read it though. Definitely a flat earther, and sounds like he is in the running for the Darwin Awards if he goes through with it. A steam powered rocket, seriously!!!!!

I just figured he was using a large beach umbrella or the like as it all sounded too Wiley Coyote to me. I wonder if he does use coal to create his steam?

Just googled around and it seems that the propulsion is only a reservoir of hot air aka steam, lasting only moments for a one time shot. The plane like "rocket" does not have a sustainable onboard power generator.

An irony, if “Mad” Mike Hughes is able to fly high enough and capture indisputable photographic evidence it's going to show the same thing as every other high altitude, near orbit picture of our globe, namely a globe. If he were to publish his photos all the people praising him as a hero of the flat earth "movement" will suddenly turn on him as a traitor. "They" got to him, "they" somehow turned him into a "globetard".

Talk about burying the lede:
He compared himself to Evel Knievel, as he promised to launch himself from a California racetrack - the first step on his steam-powered leap toward space.

The Kickstarter raised US$310 of its US$150,000 goal.

Hughes made other pitches, including a plan to fly over Texas in a "SkyLimo." But he complained to Ars Technica last year about the difficulty of funding his dreams on a chauffeur's meager salary.

A year later, he called into a flat-Earth community Web show to announce that he had become a recent convert.

"We were kind of looking for new sponsors for this. And I'm a believer in the flat Earth," Hughes said. "I researched it for several months."

* * *

A flat-Earth GoFundMe subsequently raised nearly US$8,000 for Hughes.
A homemade rocket sounds like a better grift than birther coins.
