Custom BBCodes

The general idea here is, you select some text, and then apply the BBCode of your choice.

I am NOT teaching anyone how to select text.

There are "standard" BBCodes which come with the forum software, and "custom" BBCodes which have been added. The "standard" BBCodes are all buttons you can see above the composition box when you're writing a post. The list of "custom" BBCodes is a drop-down box to the right of the "Font colour" button.

Tip #1: If you see someone else do something cool with the BBCodes, you can see how they did it by hitting the "Quote" button in their post. You don't have to actually post, just hit the button and look at what they did.

Tip #2: Play with these things, children. That's what the "Preview" button is for.

Here's an explanation of the custom BBCodes, with usage and examples where necessary:

center - Self explanatory.

[center]Creates centered text, images, or videos.[/center]

col - Renders your text in two columns.



com - Embeds Comedy Central videos.

Usage:
This one is a little tricky. You ONLY include the number of the video. At the top right of every Comedy Channel video is a box that says "Share this video," with codes for "URL" and "Embed". Copy the "URL" code, then paste it in your post. Then strip away EVERYTHING but the video ID number.

Example:
1. Copy and paste this:

2. Delete everything but the 6-digit number: 221973

3. Select that number and apply the "com" BBCode:

[center][/center]

edit - Creates a box for explaining any edits you make after submitting your post.

Edit: 'Cuz I made a boo boo, dat's why.

hide - I don't know if this one still works. Brian made it to hide text from guests. I gotta ask him about it.

highlight - Self explanatory.

Creates [highlight]highlighted text[/highlight].

imgwidth= - This is for resizing your monster graphics.

Usage:
Type the URL of your graphic, apply the "imgwidth=" BBCode, and put the width you want (the number of pixels, maximum is about 640) immediately to the right of the "=" sign. For more details and an example, check out this post.

indent - self explanatory



link - Makes a web link, blue and underlined, and opens the link in a new window (or tab, depending on your browser settings).

Usage:

1. Write what you want the button to show:

2. Put a comma after the button text:


OC Weekly, <-- see the comma?

3. WITHOUT A SPACE AFTER THE COMMA, put your link:

4. Now select the whole mess, click on the "Select Custom BBCode" thingy, and choose "link":

mm - for embedding videos from Media Matters

Usage
When you watch a Media Matters video, there's a little tab at the bottom right that says "embed". If you click on it, you get a popup with some code.

See the "id=201102160042"? That's the ID number of the video. Copy JUST THE NUMBER and wrap it with "mm" BBCode tags:

right - Self explanatory.

[right]Creates right-aligned text, images or videos.[/right]

s - Self explanatory.

Creates strikethrough text.

sekrit - Creates "spoiler" text, not visible until you click the "show" button.



sub - Self explanatory.

Creates _{subscript text}.

sup - Self explanatory.

Creates ^{superscript text}.

vimeo - Cool videos from Vimeo.

Usage:
This one is a little tricky too, on account of you have to add "www" in the right place.

1. Copy the link to your Vimeo and paste it:

2. Add "www" and a "." immediately before the word "vimeo":

3. Apply the BBCode:

[vimeo]http://www.vimeo.com/2104162[/vimeo]

wrapimg - Self explanatory.

Makes your text "wrap" around an image.

Example:
