Ash Carter and I once talked a bit about AI systems in the service of "Star Wars." He was not a strong believer. In fact, he told me to draw my gun if somebody says AI seriously. He may well have changed his mind since.

There is a great scifi story about AI's. I forget the author.

Humans built AI systems to manage our most mission-critical infrastructure (defense, electric power, etc.). Then we built them for systems of lesser importance, such as driving automobiles and flying airplanes. These systems were slightly larger than the earlier one. Then they decided to entrust our educational systems to AI. Still larger systems.

This process continued until the AI systems were as large as the planet despite Intel's best efforts. SO we constructed an AI system in space. Worked well, although it was vulnerable to space trash. So we figured out how to create virtual AI systems.

Then somebody noted that the newest systems had the capacity to incorporate all human minds, without the bother of sickness, death, etc. So people slowly discarded their bodies and went into an AI system.

The AI systems now had less to do and were vastly more powerful than their creator systems. So they decided to merge, observing that the heat death of the universe was approaching. The virtual AI survived that event.

The human minds were changed but still there. After several billion years they realized that they were lonely.

So the AI said "Let there be light."

Thanks. Asimov was unparalleled, although given his quantity and rate of publications I do agree with those who said that he was actually a four-part clone of the original.

Somebody (could it have been Ted Sturgeon?) was quoted as having said about Asimov, "It's not fair... He writes faster than I can read!"

Asimov also gave us the all-powerful Mayor. And it's a short leap from the all-powerful Mayor to the all-powerful Sheriff.

And this....
The Pentagon reportedly issued new guidance on Friday allowing transgender troops currently serving in the military to re-enlist in the coming months as the department weighs how to enforce President Trump's broader ban on their service.

Artificial intelligence can accurately guess whether people are gay or straight based on photos of their faces, according to new research suggesting that machines can have significantly better “gaydar” than humans.

The study from Stanford University – which found that a computer algorithm could correctly distinguish between gay and straight men 81% of the time, and 74% for women – has raised questions about the biological origins of sexual orientation, the ethics of facial-detection technology and the potential for this kind of software to violate people’s privacy or be abused for anti-LGBT purposes.

I wish people would stop referring to crap like this as "AI". An algorithm, not matter how sophisticated does not constitute AI.

Put simply, AI does not exist, and probably never will. As a computer science discipline, AI has over promised and under delivered for over 60 years. The problems are intractable.

So say that AI to date has been a complete and utter failure would be an understatement.

CNS: Same-Sex Couples Can Seek Damages Against Kentucky Clerk:
Two lawsuits against Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis – who infamously refused to marry same-sex couples after the historic U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage – will proceed, but only against Davis in her individual capacity, a federal judge ruled.

In a pair of 21-page rulings issued Friday, U.S. District Court Judge David L. Bunning disagreed with Davis’ assertion that her policy created a “mere inconvenience” to gay couples – whom she said could have traveled to another county to obtain licenses – and refused to dismiss personal-capacity claims against her.

* * *

Although Judge Bunning dismissed the constitutional claims against Davis in her official capacity as Rowan County clerk, citing the “insurmountable hurdle” of sovereign immunity, the couples will be allowed to seek damages against Davis as an individual after Bunning denied her motion for qualified immunity.

In his opinion, the judge cited the 2014 Supreme Court case Zablocki v. Redhail, which determined a Wisconsin statute that required noncustodial parents to obtain a court order before they could get married was unconstitutional.

* * *

Davis argued that, despite the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision in Obergefell legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, the couples’ right to marry was not clearly established when she denied them marriage licenses.

Judge Bunning disagreed.

“Obergefell answered one question – whether the fundamental right to marry extended to same-sex couples. The answer was yes, and that clearly established plaintiffs’ constitutional rights,” he wrote.

The judge concluded that “defendant had fair warning on July 6, 2015 – when she denied plaintiffs’ request for a marriage license – that her conduct was unconstitutional.”

Kim Davis won't pay a penny out of her own pocket. The haters will finance her. And celebrate her. History will not treat her as kindly.

Kim Davis showed up in Romania to promote hate:
Few people in Romania appear to know about the case of Kim Davis, the clerk for Rowan County, Ky., but local gay and transgender rights groups were unhappy about her visit. Some described her as a foreign interloper who had violated the laws in her own country.

Same-sex marriage is not permitted in Romania, but conservatives there have waged a battle to explicitly prohibit it, via a constitutional amendment.

“We invite Kim Davis to share with us her fight for freedom, her strong faith and her experience in prison, which was the price she paid for standing up for her faith,” Mihai Gheorghiu, president of the Coalition for Family, which is leading the fight to outlaw same-sex marriage, said in a statement on Wednesday.

The trip was organized by Liberty Counsel, a conservative American legal and advocacy group that represented Ms. Davis during the 2015 legal battle that saw her spend six days in jail for contempt of court. Ms. Davis’s actions, which came at a watershed moment for gay-rights advocates, reverberated across the country and led to lawsuits.

Trump Jokes: Pence ‘Wants to Hang’ All Gay People
Brittany Ferrendi 10/16/2017 2:25 pm

Donald Trump wants Mike Pence to “know who’s boss.” In a feature by The New Yorker on a possible Pence presidency and its threat to progressive ideals, a staff member from Trump’s campaign revealed the president has often belittled the vice president — which included ribbing him over his views on homosexuality and “mocking Pence’s religiosity.”

“When the conversation turned to gay rights, Trump motioned toward Pence and joked, ‘Don’t ask that guy — he wants to hang them all!’” a source told The New Yorker.

According to sources, Trump also dismissed Pence’s plans to end abortion. “During a meeting with a legal scholar, Trump belittled Pence’s determination to overturn Roe v. Wade. The legal scholar had said that, if the Supreme Court did so, many states would likely legalize abortion on their own. ‘You see?’ Trump asked Pence. ‘You’ve wasted all this time and energy on it, and it’s not going to end abortion anyway.’”

And when it came to mocking Pence’s religiousness, Trump didn’t pull any punches. “He said that, when people met with Trump after stopping by Pence’s office, Trump would ask them, ‘Did Mike make you pray?’”

Pence has a history of anti-LGBT actions as a politician. In 2015 he signed the “Religious Freedom Restoration” act which allowed Indiana businesses to discriminate based on their religion. He later backtracked on this measure. He also opposed gay people serving openly in the U.S. military. In one of several anti-gay letters, he wrote:

“Homosexuals are not as a group able bodied. They are known to carry extremely high rates of disease brought on because of the nature of their sexual practices and the promiscuity which is a hallmark of their lifestyle.”

You underestimate their pathology. The Deplorables want to live their lives free from Gays, free from Other Languages, free from Brown People, free from Challenges to their Dogma, freedom from Poor People, freedom from Science, freedom from Taxes... and if that's what they mean by "freedom," then it cannot help but end badly.

Or more specifically, they want the government to grant them the freedom to use their state and private power to enforce their will. They wish to be free to do as they please, and what they please is reducing other people's freedom since other people having it is a direct threat to their desire to dictate life to others.

No, they don't. Also note they think she was in "prison" as opposed to a brief stay in the county jail.

CAIRO — A crackdown on gay people in Egypt intensified in recent days as security forces raided cafes in downtown Cairo and courts delivered harsh prison sentences, further driving the nation’s LGBT community underground.

More than 60 people have been arrested, said human rights activists, since a concert last month by a rock group where some members of the audience waved a rainbow flag — photos of which went viral on social media and triggered public outrage.

Security forces have also detained people at their homes in the middle of the night and used apps and online chat rooms to entrap those perceived to be gay. Some cafes frequented by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community have been shut down.

We're anxiously awaiting the result of Australia's most expensive public opinion poll, to be released tomorrow - Every voter in Australia was sent a questionnaire by the federal government asking if they thought same sex marriage should be legal. This was non-compulsory, but the response was around 77%. If the answer is yes, there'll be a vote in Parliament. It was all a pretty big waste of money (why is this issue so important that we get a say, when the PM can just unilaterally declare that if Trump declares war against North Korea we'll join in?) and the campaign got pretty ugly; but here's hoping the "Yes" vote carries the day!

The "No" campaigners are already saying that if they lose, they'll introduce legislation making it legal to deny services on the basis of religious beliefs - the idea being that a bakery shouldn't be forced to bake a cake for a gay wedding. As everyone else is pointing out, if that's allowed, businesses will also be allowed to discriminate on the base of race, gender, nationality, etc. I remember once a friend of mine who is against marriage equality threw her arms up in disgust and said, "Where does it end?" Where does it end? Maybe when everyone has equal rights under the law, how does that suit?
