Manafort's work on draft op-ed does not violate gag order: defense lawyer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort did not violate a court gag order when he helped edit an opinion piece about his political work in Ukraine, his defense lawyer Kevin Downing said in a court filing on Thursday.

The filing comes after prosecutors working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller earlier this week said they could no longer agree to more lenient bail terms for Manafort, after discovering he was working with a colleague tied to Russian intelligence agencies to ghost-write an opinion piece that cast his political work in a favorable light.

Downing said in the Thursday filing that his client was only involved in editing the piece to ensure accuracy, and that it would not prejudice the case because it was ultimately published in a Ukrainian newspaper, not an American one.

Manafort is not going to cooperate. Memo to Bob Mueller -- crush him. Charge him with every outrageous crime he wantonly committed in his corrupt and immoral venality. And let him rot in prison for the rest of his miserable existence.
Perhaps the government isn’t interested in a deal.
Given that Manafort is a one-step connection to the Russians, I kind of doubt that. I tend to think that Manafort might have reason to fear the consequences of flipping far more than the worst Mueller can do.

If he has ANY sense, on which the jury is still out, he would be a VERY worried man right about now.

I've seen no evidence that Manafort has a functioning superego.

Special counsel Robert Mueller has obtained more than 100,000 pages of financial records as part of the case against President Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his business associate Richard Gates, according to court filings on Friday.

Manafort and Gates were charged last month with money laundering and tax fraud. Court filings on Friday indicate that Mueller's team expects to share hundreds of thousands of documents pertinent to the case, including the financial records, with defense attorneys by Monday.

Some of the records came from Manafort's tax preparer, which "were identified by the government as particularly relevant." Others include emails, corporate records and vendor records deemed pertinent to the case.

The court filings also revealed that Mueller has issued 15 search warrants related to the case against Manafort, and has targeted bank accounts in the Grenadines, Cyprus and Saint Vincent believed to be used by the former Trump aide.

Pro tip: If you don't want the government knowing that you edited a particular document, make sure you use the "inspect document" feature of Microsoft Word to remove any personally identifying metadata from the document. That doesn't mean they still won't find out some other way, but at least the track changes feature won't have your name in neon.

I am reading John le Carre's books starting with his selected memoirs Pigeon Tunnels. He would likely suggest Manafort and his Ukraine writer buddy go old school on communications - one hand written manuscript, hand couriered to a physical dropbox, burn upon reading. :smoking:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. federal judge on Monday issued a stern warning to President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort to refrain from making statements to the media that could harm his right to a fair trial.

Actual source was one of those "you had to be there" parody tweets from around the September search warrant execution timeframe that massaged the NYT article lede to read:
WASHINGTON - Paul J. Manafort was in bed early one morning watching an episode of the CBS sitcom "Kevin Can Wait" when federal agents bearing a search warrant picked the lock on his front door and raided his Virginia home. They took binders stuffed with documents and copied his computer files, along with two boxes in his closet marked "Hats I can pull off" and "Hats I can't pull off."
The actual article didn't mention what kind of television Manafort watches (if he watches) and had agents taking pictures of expensive suits in Manafort's closet.
