Sheriff Joe Arpaio - General Topic

#1

Post by mimi » Mon Aug 17, 2015 12:16 pm

I thought we already had a general topic for Sheriff Joe, but I can't find it now.

Anyway, another fake threat to Arpaio:

Arpaio: Woman sent 'white substance' to MCSO, framed ex
Garrett Mitchell, The Republic | azcentral.com 3:04 p.m. MST August 15, 2015
A Phoenix woman who allegedly sought to frame her ex-lover by sending an envelope with a suspicious white substance addressed to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office was arrested early Saturday morning, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

Alma Pacheco, 35, was arrested at 3 a.m. Saturday and later confessed to sending the white, powdery substance to the Sheriff's Office to embarrass and frame her ex-boyfriend, whose name she wrote on the return address, Arpaio said.

Pacheco sent the envelope to Arpaio's downtown Phoenix office "to get more publicity of her boyfriend's arrest," the sheriff said.

Investigators found the ex-boyfriend at work at Casino Arizona, where he told authorities he had issues with a former girlfriend. That girlfriend, Pacheco, reportedly sent him more than 6,000 texts and threatened to send cornstarch to the Sheriff's Office in order to get him in trouble, Arpaio said.

WOW!!

Nonprofit cuts ties with MCSO's animal posse

[...]

That, according to Marsha Hill, the president of the nonprofit now called the Alliance for Arizona Animal Protection. Hill said the new name, with updated board members, was filed with the Arizona Corporation Commission last week.

Hill said the move came because she and the other board members felt bullied by the sheriff's office to turn over most of the board's bank account with no accountability for how MCSO was going to spend the money.

[...]

The request came from Deputy Chief Brian Lee in December of 2013. The letter states the donation would help offset costs that are currently being drawn from the current budget to operate the MASH I and MASH II programs. Those programs house and care for abused and neglected animals seized by MCSO's Animal Crimes Unit.

[...]

According to Hill, the board voted unanimously not to write that large of a check to the sheriff's office. She said the foundation paid veterinary, food bills and other expenses incurred by the MASH units when bills were turned over to them and they had clear records of where the money was going. But to turn over that massive amount of money with no accountability, Hill said she and her fellow board members believe would be irresponsible.

In February, Hill said she was notified by an MCSO sergeant that she was the subject of an "administrative inquiry" and that she was being put on suspension as commander of the posse. She was ordered not to have contact with anyone on the posse.Hill believed the sheriff's office was retaliating against her and trying to bully her.

I'm shocked. SHOCKED I tells ya.

Still up to his old tricks...

[quote]In response to Hill's accusations and announcement about the newly named nonprofit, MCSO issued the following written statement:

"Ms. Hill, an unpaid volunteer with the Sheriff's Office, was placed on admin leave as commander of the Sheriff's Animal Cruelty Posse due to an ongoing investigation currently with the Attorney General's office into how she has been running the 501-C3. As is customary, when a person is on admin leave, Ms Hill was told to make no contact with anyone from the office during and through to the completion of the investigation. Ms Hill failed to follow that instruction. For this reason she was terminated from the posse."

MCSO: CANADIAN COURT GIVES A “SLAP ON THE WRIST’ TO SUSPECT WHO MADE EIGHT DEATHS THREATS AGAINST SHERIFF ARPAIO AND FAMILY:
The Alberta, Canada man who has been repeatedly arrested after making eight death threats against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his family, finally received a sentence in a Canadian court this week that barely amounts to “a slap on the wrist” according to Arpaio.

Lionel Makokis was sentenced to a mere 18 months of probation to include six (6) months house arrest and he is also prohibited from owning a firearm for the next 10 years.

“This man fits every profile we have ever seen of a domestic terrorist waiting to unleash his insanity on innocent lives and yet all the Canadian courts do with him is sentence him to house arrest?” Arpaio says. “At the very least, Makokis requires long-term psychological care in a mental hospital, not a six-month house arrest in front of a computer or TV screen watching crime dramas or news events which may fuel his imagination.”
Arpaio points to the most recent email from Makokis as perhaps the most alarming so far.

In it, Makokis said his plans to murder the Sheriff would be part of an act that would be “something worse than Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Al Queda and ISIS put together.”

Arpaio says, “In the email to my office, Makokis names a number of mass killings that have occurred at the hands of domestic and international terrorists. So clearly, he is aware of the horror of those acts and is now threatening to do something of a similar nature.”

Makokis is a less credible threat to the safety of others than Arpaio is.

Loathing Joe Arpaio is a sign of insanity? Funny, I'd have thought just the opposite. :lol:

Az. Central: Roberts: U.S. Marshal Gonzales considering a run against Arpaio:
It’s one of the hottest political questions around town: Will U.S. Marshal David Gonzales run against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio next year?

Gonzales isn’t saying, but the longtime lawman is sounding like a candidate . He says a number of prominent Republicans and even Democrats have asked him to run against the six-term sheriff and that he’s seriously considering it.

"I’m very interested. I’m trying to gauge is there a path to victory and how do I get there ...," he said. “With any organization, there comes a time when there needs to be a change and that’s true with any police organization.”

Arpaio declined, through a spokesman, to comment. His longtime campaign manager, Chad Willems, said Gonzales has repeatedly promised the sheriff he won’t run against him. Even if he does, Willems said he won’t win.

* * *

Despite his problems of late, the only announced candidate to challenge Arpaio is Dan Saban, a former Buckeye police chief who is making a third run — his second as a Republican. Former Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon has said he may run on the Democratic ticket, but he told me he likely wouldn’t run if Gonzales gets into the race.

Gonzales, 61, is a longtime Republican with a solid reputation in law-enforcement circles. He spent 25 years in the Department of Public Safety before President George W. Bush appointed him as U.S. marshal for Arizona in 2002. He was reappointed by President Barack Obama.

* * *

Gonzales said he likely won’t make a decision about whether to run until January or February. No doubt playing into his decision: whether or not U.S. District Court Judge Murray Snow recommends criminal charges be filed against Arpaio. Snow is expected to rule by the end of the year.

Willems expressed surprise that Gonzales is pondering a run for sheriff.

“He has told the sheriff multiple times, even very recently, that he would never run for sheriff as long as Arpaio was in office,” Willems said.

Gonzales said the sheriff hears what he wants to hear.

Arizona man arrested for allegedly stalking controversial sheriff

By Ray Sanchez and Dave Alsup, CNN

Updated 7:15 PM ET, Thu December 17, 2015
(CNN)A 43-year-old Arizona man who authorities say claims to be Jesus Christ has been arrested for allegedly stalking Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and writing a letter that caused a bomb scare at a Phoenix hotel.

The man, identified as Ruben Pena, 43, is accused of a class four felony hoax and a class three felony stalking count for allegedly making threats against the controversial Arizona lawman following visits to Arpaio's downtown headquarters, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Thursday.

Pena claimed to be "Jesus Christ" during a visit to sheriffs headquarters last week and demanded to speak with Arpaio, the statement said.

When Pena's request was "not completed in [a] timely manner," he allegedly left a letter saying, "Joe!! Your ass is mine Sincerely Your creator & Destroyer," according to the sheriff's officer statement. During previous visits, Pena had referred to Arpaio as "a piece of sh--."

Sheriff's deputies this week found two letters allegedly written by Pena in a bag at headquarters, the statement said. In the letters, Pena calls himself as "Jesus Christ Jr. Son of Jesus of Nazareth" and refers to a "Bag location is @ renaisance Fire/exit," according to the statement

Politico: Trump's political godfather:
Joe Arpaio, America's most controversial sheriff, talks to 'Off Message' about what he taught Donald Trump about politics.

* * *

Oh, and [Arpaio] expended millions in county resources to fruitlessly pursue Barack Obama’s “fake” birth certificate (a crusade he insists isn’t over by a long shot). That’s what got him his first give-’em-hell letter from part-time birther Trump. “That’s not dead as far as I’m concerned,” he told me.

I read the Politico story but not the full interview. I saw absolutely nothing to support the headline "Trump's political godfather". Maybe it's in the interview transcript but frankly, I can't stomach reading that - the recap was bad enough.

Funny interview. Birfing graph:
Oh, and he used county resources to fruitlessly pursue Barack Obama’s “fake” birth certificate. (An Arpaio-allied group later tried to reimburse the county for the expense but was rebuffed by the board of supervisors.) That’s what got him his first give-’em-hell letter from part-time birther Trump. “That’s not dead as far as I’m concerned,” he told me.
Donald and Joe have the same birfday!
PHOENIX — Joe Arpaio was standing in his top-floor office looking down on a summer cityscape baked semolina-loaf brown waiting for Donald Trump to call, or even email, a “Happy Birthday” message.

“Did he get in touch?” the 84-year-old Maricopa County sheriff asked his assistant, who replied, “no,” but a Trump aide had sent a really sweet email. A few days later, at a rally in the city in a 109-degree Saturday, Arpaio introduced a mellower-than-usual Trump who, in turn, delivered his requisite "I love Sheriff Joe!"

CBS: Arpaio campaign breaking records, spending millions:
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's campaign has taken in nearly $10 million for his re-election bid, but has less than half that amount on hand, due to an expensive fund raising effort.

* * *

According to the most recent campaign finance report, the "Elect Sheriff Joe Arpaio" committee raised $9.9 million through May. But spending on fundraising and consultants left the campaign with $4.1 million in the bank.

KPNX: New poll has Penzone leading Arpaio in race for sheriff:
Democratic candidate for sheriff Paul Penzone leads six-term Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, 48 percent to 44 percent, in a poll released Thursday by the Penzone campaign.

The poll might be the first time any candidate has topped Arpaio in a public opinion survey in recent memory. Penzone's lead in the poll, commissioned by his campaign, is within the margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percent.

* * *

Penzone has no opponents in the Democratic primary. Arpaio faces former Buckeye police chief Dan Saban, businesswoman Marsha Hill; and Wayne Baker in the Republican primary.

KSAZ: Penzone threatens Arpaio with a lawsuit:
Democratic candidate Paul Penzone is threatening to sue Sheriff Joe Arpaio for defamation. The threat comes from a campaign ad that Arpaio ran during the last election. Penzone is urging the Sheriff not to run the ad this time around.

The ad aired in 2012, and many say it's an example of dirty politics. It accuses Penzone of being physically abusive with his ex-wife Susan during an incident in 2003. In April she signed a affidavit calling the allegations inaccurate and misleading. Now Penzone and his attorneys say they'll sue for defamation if the Arpaio camp tries to run the ads again.

* * *

The campaign for Sheriff Joe Arpaio responded with a statement in part: "Hiding behind lawyers and threatening to sue the Arpaio campaign and the media, is nothing short of a cowardly act from a failed candidate. The ad ran four-years-ago and was based on fact from court records. There is much more to this story, and the voters of Maricopa County deserve to know about the candidates they will choose from."
