I'm reading Jonathan Alter's "The Promise" and it's pretty clear to me how the president deals with stuff like this. He is a remarkable synthesist and multitasker, but also curiously binary. The birth certificate stuff was either over the threshold as something to worry about or not. Until now, it wasn't.
The other thing about the president: When he makes a decision, it sticks. "Release it. Let's move on."
He is sometimes tone deaf to certain optics, though, and his administration has consistently underestimated the staying power and diligence of the opposition. It'll be very interesting to see how this plays out.
One thing: releasing it at the height of the ginned-up controversy guarantees the biggest media bang for the buck. Several fb friends of ours have said the line "I don't really care, but shouldn't he just release it?" A lot of people didn't know about the COLB who would otherwise have been convinced of it. Nobody will be able to claim ignorance of this after today.
