Last spring, I taught high school physics in Boston. When we discussed the electromagnetic spectrum, I incorporated a civics lesson. I summarized the regulatory process of the buying and selling of public airwaves; and pointed out the relationship between media-related commerce and the continued failure or success of our democracy. That is, whoever controls the flow of information controls the vote. I used the current primary as evidence of the dangers of conglomeration to a well-informed electorate. Finally, I rallied my students to become involved in their democracy warning ‘if you do not take control of your life, someone else, with interests different from yours, will control your life for you.’ (And I assured them that they were as capable of starting their own telecommunications empire as General Electric.)

I have taught as a substitute teacher at this inner-city high school for years; my freshmen are now seniors. This morning, my students were ecstatic. As always, I refused to tell them for whom I voted. As usual, they mistakenly inferred this meant, I must have voted for McCain. Of course, I did; but I never disclose my vote. This is not my role as a teacher.

Instead, when they proclaimed, “We have a black President,” I merely taught them, “No, we don’t; we have a black President-elect.” Then I explained the electoral college. And I pointed out that, the electors are free to vote for whomever they want. The general election only tells them the preferences of the voters in their state.

I managed to bite my tongue, even when one student called John McCain a loser. Oh, I did explain that, he was a war hero; and that calling him a loser speaks more about the student than the man. But I wanted to scream at his insolence.

Then, this student said John McCain was a loser because he picked that stupid woman for his running mate. Now, I pointed out that, on paper, Governor Palin is more qualified to be President than Senator Obama. And, based on this obvious superiority of qualifications, I told the student, he sounded misogynistic. I also suggested, perhaps, he was making fun of her accent. He countered with this question: if she isn’t stupid then, how come everyone thinks she is? This was my opening.

I explained that, given the same information, people often reach the same conclusions. And, this is to be expected. I told the class how sites on the internet containing information contrary to the common view were scrubbed as soon as they were discovered. I reported the treasure trove that was Google 2001. I know that, some of them heard me.

These students, seniors, are heading to college. They are among our best and brightest. But they haven’t a clue about how their government works; or doesn’t. And it would appear that, at this point, they don’t care.

This is a great ‘talking points memo.’ Will discuss this with my history class today. Taught a senior class yesterday. The students were ecstatic that BO had won. Listened in on their discussion. One student thought BO was from KS. ‘No,’ the other corrected her. ‘He’s from HI.’ ‘No, he isn’t; he was born in Kenya.’ Now I interrupted. ‘If he was born in Kenya then, given his mother’s age at his birth, she was unable to pass on her citizenship to him and so, he is not a natural born citizen and thus is ineligible to be POTUS.’ You should have seen the look of shock on their faces.

As always, I disclose these truths about BO in a calm even tone. Breaking a young person out of a kool-aid induced stupor is serious work.

Jbjd, you firmly believe that it is your role to indoctrinate students. Your "Out of the Mouths of Babes" post made it very evident that you are completely supportive of student indoctrination as long as such indoctrination agrees with your beliefs.

My first thought when I read this was, well done. We agree! And we do. Unfortunately, in your OOTMOBs post, you purposely mislead your 9th graders about the electoral college voters.

People, you cannot imagine how many classrooms are filled with books about Barack Obama (the brand that is, not the real person). One book has the sub-title, “From Kansas to Kenya.” (As far as I know, BO never lived in KS.) Part of the book described BO in church listening to the voice of God saying, ‘What’s your hurry (to change the world)?’ I cannot wait until he is ‘outed’ and the books come out outlining the fraud, which was right under our noses, all along

I saw jbjd was here today and wondered what was up with that? So, I went to her blog and found she has a new entry. "A ROADMAP to ELECTION FRAUD in TEXAS in the 2008 PRESIDENTIAL (ELECTORS) ELECTION"

I looked at the pretty pictures, but I still can't find the "fraud" part. Perhaps jbjd can explain?
