Is it just me? Or are others experiencing this too.

The board works fine for me, but the display is messed up. I've tried 3 different browsers (Chrome, Explorer, Firefox) -- and the problem carries over to all 3. No formatting. I've lost the theme/stylesheet/whatever. When I do a "view source" on a page, I don't see opening tags or header tags.

What gives?

Everyone is having the problem. This is a text only version. Apparently, the installation of Foggy's new templates went terribly wrong. Justin has an announcement on it in the Announcements forum.

More then likely it just lost the link to the CSS, or the CSS is missing. That is the Cascading Style Sheet and is what helps make everything so pretty.

Or the board has secretly been taken over by Orly and her webmaster, cause we all know what her board looks like. ;) ;)

Yup and that pretty style sheet does not work with older browsers like my IE6 either. It works fine right now, with no CSS however - so at least Foggy helped in isolating one problem. No way the admins would change the style sheet to see if that was the IE6 problem. Board is also pretty fast as a text board. There was a time when we all communicated without fancy graphics - we used a thing called ascii text.

This message being typed on IE6. It was fun while it lasted.

Sorry. I asked for a chat link. There are links all over here. Even in the drop down boxes. I don't know computer stuff.

I'm sure Teh Rooster will get it back to right.

I know he's working on it. Apologies to Mrs. Leghorn and Little Leghorns as well. Cuz... you know The Rooster's working on it.

I have the chat link added right on the top tool bar. Seems redundant to add one to the forum. There is also a chat link on the main PJ page, which I think no one ever looks at. http://www.politijab.com

The style sheet didn't load -- that's what's wrong. Maybe the name of the style sheet was changed but not the forum link to it? This is what happens when that occurs. Sometimes the style sheet loads late and the page will look like this for a couple of seconds.

Back on topic, I find the board has slowed down quite a bit.

Someone told me that might be because the database is getting bigger.

But we only have 43,679 posts, total.

On my other forum, we have 197,271, and it's cooking right along.

I think the problem might be our hosting company. Whatever it is, Justin and I are working on that, too.

Apologies to the herd for the screwup today. The problem was, the program I use to access the forum files, called WS-FTP, works perfectly at my home, but when I tried to use the same program on my shop computer, it worked perfectly when I used it in my "sandbox" forum where I test everything before I try it on PJ, but when I did the exact same thing on PJ, it didn't work perfectly.

That was a stressful couple of hours, but I closed the shop ½ hour early -- which is against my religion -- and then raced home. Two minutes after I got home, it was all fixed. It wasn't that I was doing anything wrong, it's just that WS-FTP didn't work at my shop the way it works on my home computer.

But I'm still apologizing, 'cause the board looked HIDEOUS for a while back there ...

Just a heads up -- I used to use WS-FTP but ran into an issue a few years back that led me to switch to a program called WinSCP -- which I much prefer. WinSCP is open source so it is free to try & use.

I honestly don't remember what the problem was that led me to switch... but I much prefer WinSCP & will never go back. It's designed to work in a secure environment (hence the "SCP") but can be used for regular FTP as well.

Quite honestly... whatever was causing the problems for myself and others was pretty clearly out of our control. The site was working, albeit a bit slowly, for most people without issue. Me personally, I couldn't post, send messages, approve posts, etc. etc. etc. for the majority of yesterday. Then I tried IE... and things would work, most of the time. It was a strange, strange day.

We found no issues of any kind with our internal databases. We found nothing wrong with the site itself. We didn't make any major changes (like the one Foggy made today that made us look very text-y). So... whatever it was... it was your basic "act of Internet God" that we could not control. I'm glad it has passed, seemingly with no lasting ill effects. I hope it doesn't happen again anytime soon.

Personally, I blame North Korea. I'm reasonably certain the cyber attacks likely played some part in the overall interference we experienced. Friggin' North Korea.

It had to be an Orlybot attack! Those anti-American traitors are trying to demolish freedom of speach. This is their first attempt, be assured! They will return, stronger and more resolved to smash PJ to bits!

Oh, wait, those people are morons. Most don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. What wasI thinking?

Just speculating here, and way too technical for most readers to care about... but I was surmising that when Foggy wanted to put in the chat link, he decided to hand edit a header template file, by downloading it, editing it, & then replacing it via FTP. Only... again guessing ... maybe when he did the upload, it was loaded in binary format rather than ASCII. Why this would happen, I wouldn't know .... but its the only way I figure that WS-FTP could be implicated.

(I have been known to break a script or two by such errors in my time).

It would make some sense, since the site seemed to be working, but clearly missing whatever it needed to go into the header of each page. So a corrupted header-template file would be the likely culprit.

In any case, it's fixed now.... I was just offering what I thought might be a constructive suggestion for the future. (I gave up the practice of law about a dozen or so years ago in favor of becoming a web techy person... and since that time have been a rather stubborn hand-coder, so of course along the way I've personally made just about every mistake that a hand-coder can manage to make. HTML & style-sheets are not always that forgiving of misplaced punctuation or mismatched quotation marks.).
