2014 Governor: Texas

Postby Dolly » Fri Jun 28, 2013 3:48 pm

Wendy Davis for Texas governorTexas has been inhospitable to Democrats for a while. In fact, it's been a full generation (20 years), since the Democrats last won a statewide-elected office in the state. And while demographic changes are shaking up the state, its poor-performing Latino community (51st in the nation in voter participation) has severely undermined Democratic chances. But polling has already showed Hillary Clinton competitive in hypothetical 2016 Texas matchups, the same polling that also showed this:In January we found Wendy Davis trailing Rick Perry just 47-41 despite- at that time- pretty low name recognition: http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main ... rable.htmlNo one knew who Wendy Davis was when that poll was conducted. It's a whole different reality today for the Fort Worth Democrat.........Wendy Davis would nationalize that Texas governor's race, and help accelerate the state's transition to Purple (and eventually Blue) status.Update: So the answer was "hell yes!". Click here to join the Draft Wendy Davis movement. Lend your name, leave an encouraging message, and drop a few dollars if you've got 'em into her campaign. Let's show her we've got her back!http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/06/2 ... s-governor

PublicPolicyPolling @ppppollsThis sums up the challenge for Dems in Texas- Davis fav +10, Perry approval -5, and Perry leads her by 14 anyway: [/break1]publicpolicypolling.com/main/2013/07/davis-popular-but-gubernatorial-bid-a-long-shot.html]http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main ... -shot.html

Reuters: Rick Perry says that he will not seek re-election in 2014 to an unprecedented fourth term as Governor.I would want two more sources before believing this.

Here's one...PJ Media

BREAKING: Perry Will Not Seek Re-Election for Governor of Texasby Bryan PrestonJuly 8, 2013 - 11:22 amTexas Gov. Rick Perry touted the Texas economic record en route to announcing that he will not seek re-election as Texas governor today. When his current term ends Perry will have served as governor for 14 years, by far the longest stretch for governor in a state that rarely re-elects its top official. The governor quoted Ecclesiastes 3 as he made his announcement: “To everything there is a season,” Perry quoted as he announced that he will pass on the torch of leadership to a new generation. He told the audience in San Antonio and live streamed on the Internet that he will spend the next 18 months leading the state and assessing his future options, leaving the possibility of another run for president open. Perry said that he will announce such plans “in due time.”Perry’s move opens the door for Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Attorney General Greg Abbott, among others, to vie for governor.

So he is going to learn how to remember all three of three things and run for President of the United States if he succeeds.

So I guess he's going to use the next two years to run around the country, making speeches and raising funds for his presidential election. Now I can watch Chris Christie and Rick Perry duke it out on TV! Better than TV wrestling!

Christie will eat him for lunch.(See what I did there?)

If so, good thing for someone who already experienced extreme difficulty counting to three. Four is probably beyond his abilities.

Further that point from @BenjySarlin, it's worth noting that Perry possibly isn't the only governor eyeing that rule right now.

Well, well, looks like little Greggie Abbott might well be the next Governor of Texas. Those of us who know him know how profoundly wrong that really is. Although his IQ might be on par with Perry and W, so in that sense, he's following tradition.

Thing is, I don't think Abbott believes 99 percent of the shit he says. I know all politicians are opportunists, but Abbott takes the cake. He was on the fast track to becoming a lobbyist until he got hit by the tree. He was a handsome and genial young man. He ran around with the most liberal folks I knew. Of course, that all changed after lightning hit that tree and fell on him. Despite a respectable educational pedigree, he just ain't that bright. But he was smart enough to see where the political winds were blowing, and he jumped on the bandwagon. [bad metaphor, not enough coffee yet.] I could tell many stories, but I won't. :PEdited to add my critique of my writing.

Yes, I noticed in the narrative that it's gone from the tree getting hit by lightning (which is what happened) to the tree falling due to high winds. And Abbott's assertions that the tort "reform" laws he helped push through wouldn't have affected a case like his is just another falsehood. No doubt he was very, very seriously injured. But even at the time, I thought his claims against the homeowner and the tree service were a far stretch. If it had happened today, this settlement would have never occurred. The defense lawyers would be emboldened by the RWers on the Court of Appeals and the Texas Supreme Court. They would have offered nuisance value of the suit.

Reminds me of Tom Delay and his push for big time tort reform, after he received an accident settlement, too. Seriously, "I got mine, fuck you" ought to be permanently tattooed on the forehead of every person who registers Republican from now on.
