Dear Foggy: (letters from our readers)

Dear Foggy:

Why does Fogbow go offline every Sunday morning at 5 a.m. Eastern time? :daydream:

Sincerely,

Early Riser

Early Riser:

That's the time I do system maintenance every week. At that time, few people on the East Coast have awoken, and it's 2 a.m. on the Left Coast, and godonlyknows what time it is in Singapore and Switzerland and Oz and places. But I figure it's the time when the fewest number of peeps will be inconvenienced if we go offline for half an hour or more.

During that time, I clear out the logs (Error log, User log, Moderator log, Administrator log). I make a backup of the database. Then I open up phpMyAdmin and use it to repair and optimize all the tables in the database, to keep it running smoothly. Because of the size of our database (we have almost 925,000 posts now ), that takes some time. Then I make a second backup of the database. (The first backup is in case the repair-and-optimize operation goes horribly wrong somehow). Then I bring us back online.

God I hate Sunday. I have to get up at 4:30 and drink covfefe so I don't screw it up. This is one of the problems of being an agnostic: No day of rest. But it's an unwritten common law contract -- Fogbow peeps click the Donate button at the top of the page (hint, hint, wink, wink, say no more), so I get up at 4:30 on Sunday and go to work at 5. On the bright side, my kittehs appreciate being fed a little earlier than usual, so I got that goin' for me.

Sincerely,

Foggy

Deer Foggie,

Why has TFB gone off line at 5 AM occasionally during other days of the week? Inquiring minds want to know.

Sincerely,

Heinie Manush.

Dear Heinie,

That wasn't me, it was two other guys, I was nowhere near there, and it was totally unintentional. I have no idea what you're talking about and they'll never pin it on me in a million years. I'm an innocent man, I tells ya, totally innocent!

I'm usually on the forum reading by 5:15 and I haven't noticed it being offline, but let me know if it happens again.

Sincerely,

Foggy

Riddle solved: it's around 11am local time when I sit down with a cofveve coffee and intend to slurp my first refreshing thread of TFB, only to be awakened to the fact that somebody else has also risen from the ashes and is performing webmasterly magick on the flying pigs electrons

Dear Foggy:

Why does my mind go offline more often than it used to, and more often than not?

Sincerely,
Concerned

Dear RTH10260,

I suspected as much, but I have to go offline sometime or the critical work of system administration doesn't get done.

It's all for the common good of humanity, and I work as quickly as possible in order to minimize the disruption. Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Foggy

Dear Concerned,

Nonsense and shenanigans, my love. Like everyone here, you learn something new and are a smarter person at the end of every day you spend on Fogbow. I learn cool new stuff from you, so how offline can your brain really be?

Sincerely,

Foggy

Here it's at the end of the workday. I figure it's Foggy's way of telling me to get back to work and check back after dinner when there will be lots of new stuff posted ;)

Dear Foggy,

Take the time in Rawley, add 12 hours and you'll be close enough. For our friends in Ozzyland, add a couple hours more.

And thank you for making it about me. I feel very speshul :)

Sincerely,

Somerset

Dear Foggy,
What would a grifting emoji look like? I've seen burglar emojis but that may be too much. Found this guy but not sure he's specific enough.
