What makes the most sense for someone getting up to speed isn't how many motions Orly filed in her lawsuits, but what the major ones were, when they were launched, when they were decided, and what was the outcome. That's an awesome timeline.

Here's what I find most striking, just quickly reading it through. Up to June or July 2008, each item in the timeline almost reads as a tit-for-tat: someone makes claim (often about McCain) -- then someone debunks it. It reads like the national consciousness is one continuum.

But around June 2008 there's a disconnect, and it's as if the birthers truly went off the rails. They aren't even answering the debunkers. The debunkers are saying things like 'this will put this to rest,' and then the birthers come out with 'here's the definitive proof of forgery.'

And so it went.

I had a question about exactly where the President's COLB first appeared. From memory I thought it appeared first on DailyKos and later of Fight the Smears. This was of course the copy that had the certification number redacted. I wonder if there is any way to confirm the first appearance?

Edit: I found the original Daily Kos article was released at 8:44 AM EDT on 6/12/2008, http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/06/1 ... ertificate It does not cite Fight the Smears as the source.

Fight the Smears was launched the same day the Daily Kos posted the COLB. See msnbc report here. In the comments to the Daily Kos article, the author says he got the COLB from the Obama campaign.

Yes, the "FIght the Smears" web site was launched the same day but I still maintain the COLB was first posted at Daily Kos. It is a given that the Obama campaign was the source.

Neither the MSNBC article nor the linked Time article mention the actual release of the COLB so that doesn't really settle where it was first posted.

Also if you look at the comments on the Daily Kos site you will find this:

The "two newspapers that requested it" is actually politifact.com -- a joint debunking venture of The St. Petersburg Times and Congressional Quarterly.

It was requested in order to debunk the "his middle name is Muhammed" lie. Politifact researcher Connie Humburg sought and found his marriage license, property records, driver's license info, bar association details, etc. The only record she couldn't access was the birth certificate because the State of Hawaii does not make them public.

Unfortunately, in writing, "We tried to obtain a copy of Obama’s birth certificate, but his campaign would not release it and the state of Hawaii does not make such records public" (emphasis added) they apparently unintentionally set off a new wave of wacky conserv-o-partisan conspiracy theories.

A poor choice of words. The campaign may not have even had a copy of it themselves since, again, the state doesn't make them public.

No big deal but I believe I was correct that it was first posted on DailyKos on 6/12/2008 and then shortly thereafter on the Fight the Smears site. The Fight the Smears page is no longer available.

Check our member blogs. Loren or OFGS or BadFiction must have the details. IIRC, DailyKos got the file via email first, before FTS even launched, bit it was a matter of hours.

I'm told the links are clickable on some browsers. Maybe download the doc? It's in Word, so the links are in the original.
