I see most people are still adding the "xxx" to links to Orly's blog. I think everyone realizes that her blog is at a higher risk than most blogs for malware (and 100% risk for stupidity). Do we still need to do this? I find it slightly annoying and a real pain on the iPad, to click on the link and remove the extra characters. I would say as long as you do not "hide" the link with the link command and just post the natural link that we should not go to the effort of hosing up links to Orly's blog. If you want to add warning I am all for that. I use Avast! AV software and never had a problem.

Experienced participants in PJ and TFB know about the need for up-to-date virus and spyware software when visiting Orly's House o' Malware and a number of other Birther and RWNJ Web sites. However, every time that I visit TFB I find some number of "guests" on the board, and frequently new members join. They might not know what they are facing out in the wild world of the Internet in which the nutz play.

Perhaps 25% of computer users disable the anti-virus software that came with their computers. Many computer users who do have active anti-virus software do not regularly update the virus definitions. Anti-spyware software is installed on only a fraction of computers. Some users have installed fake anti-virus software that is itself spyware. The number of computer users who effectively have no protection may be quite large. One security software vendor estimates that 59% of the computers in the world are infected with malware of some sort.

Because Orly's site has so often shown itself to be infected, pointing untutored users to that Web site without warning might cause new infections, and those infections can spread, creating more than one victim. I do think that Stern's url might provide the needed warning, obviating the need for doctoring the url to make it work. Even better would be a new smilie with something like a caution sign.

Maybe Foggy could create a short script to enclose her links in a skull and crossbones; perhaps change the text color to some bilious shade of Moldavian green.

It needs some kind of a warning. One must consider the tourist trade.

I think the url bracketing (or similar) should suffice. It makes the point without being too inconvenient.

I gotta admit that I've visited the site quite a few time in the past half-year or so and haven't had any malware problems. Also, too, it can be a slight PITA to edit out the xxx's when pasting to the browser address line.

I used the xxx because someone somewhere sometime or other was fussing that we should use them so no one would get Orly cooties by accident, so I did. But I’m good with crossbones!
