I just tried to send a pdf file to another member as an attachment to a PM. I had previously checked, and hadn't seen any size or other restrictions on PM attachments, the board faq or in how-to postings. This particular file is 152k, which didn't seem like a big deal.

The attachment was rejected with an error message stating that (I'm paraphrasing) files with pdf extensions weren't allowed. I tried a cloned copy of the file without the extension, but the software was too sly for that one.

So, I'd appreciate learning the rules.

TIA

I have found that any file format it seems gives that error.

Mr. Rooster...Is there a file format that PM does allow???

Ah, the old Cheese Shop scenario.

Not urgent, btw; I found a willing passenger pigeon for tonight.

I have enabled uploading attachments consisting of 'documents' in both posts and private messages now.
The category 'documents' includes the following file extensions:

ai, doc, docm, docx, dot, dotm, dotx, odg, odp, ods, odt, pdf, ppt, pptm, pptx, ps, rtf, xls, xlsb, xlsm, xlsx

Also, I enabled uploading attachments consisting of 'graphics' in private messages.

Also, I increased the maximum size of an attachment to 512 KB. And I previously took off all limits as to total size of all attachments on the forum.

However, I ask you to be sparing in the use of this feature. Please use links wherever possible, instead of uploading attachments.

Links to PDFs (or graphics, or any other documents) on other sites do not significantly increase the size of our database, but attachments are directly uploaded to my file system. We have about 31 MB of attachments already. That adds to the time it takes to back up my files each week, and it could become a problem in the future, especially now that I allow every attachment to be half a megabyte in size.

► It's not difficult to get a free Photobucket account, upload your graphics there, and link to them on the forum instead of uploading graphics into my files.

► You can also get a free Scribd account for uploading documents, and link to them on the forum instead of uploading them into my files.

I'm trying to be accommodating, but only to the point where it makes administration of the forum difficult or risky, and then I may have to draw a line.

Thanks Foggy, that's accommodating and then some.

In fact on reflection I think you might have gone overboard, because my (implied) request was out of line.

Will shortly revise and extend remarks when I have a chance.
