My '67 Cougar. I've had dreams about finding that car. Oh I wish.

My '69 Cougar...little bro rolled it while I was in the Navy outside CONUS.

I had a great '67 Buick Electra. I could fit 10 people comfortably in that car. Of course back then we were much slimmer. Now I guess it would be more a 6 person car. Still I loved that car. It was 430 with a 4 barrel (carburetor that is).

Great piece by the way. I must have kicked up some dust in here......Mine? A bright yellow 1975 VW Super Beetle convertible. If I could sit in it one more time I know I could go back in time.

My father, who was an idiot, had a '67 mustang. It needed about $1,000 bucks of work done so he traded it in on a brand new, electric blue, 1972...Pinto. ](*,) Said Pinto became my first car several years later.Did I mention that my father was an idiot?

My first car was a 1978 Datsun B210 (the ugly coupe, not the cool hatchback).

The One I Loved Back Then (The Corvette Song)

recorded by George Jones

written by Gary Gentry

......

Oh she was hotter than a two dollar pistol

She was the fastest thing around

Long and lean every young man's dream

She turned every head in town

She was built and fun to handle son

I'm glad that you walked dropped in

She reminds me of the one I loved back then

......

This'll make you feel better: I traded my 1965 Mustang in for a 1972 MGB convertible. Oy.

My first car was a pale yellow Opel Kadett. It was used. It had electrical problems and when it rained or was humid (basically all the time in NoVA) it had to be jump started, so I always parked at the top of a hill, facing down. I also learned to push-start it myself, for emergencies. Oy.

My brother loaned it out one night when I was away, to a friend who was going into the Navy a few days later. I didn't see it for weeks. Friend had gotten drunk, crashed it and then walked away, cuz it wasn't his car. He couldn't remember where, but we found out when we got a call from the impound lot. It wasn't drivable. He had bent the frame pretty badly.

I don't want that one back, but I'll take my '74 Fiat Spider back any day. :-bd

My first car, that I drove in high school, was a '67 Mercury Comet. The '67 Electra was the first car I bought for $100. The yearly insurance on it was slightly under $100, maybe $95. At the time we had a gas price spike due to one of the oil embargoes. It cost me almost $30 to fill up its gas tank. I used to joke that I increased the car's value by 30% every time I filled up the tank.

Aging hippie here. First car: '68 VW bus. Nader said if he had known, Unsafe At Any Speed would have been about my car instead. An eighth of an inch of sheet metal between the car in front of you and your legs. Tendency for the engine to catch fire in a crash (fuel hose popped off). And so forth. Don't miss that car for a minute. If my kids get it back for me, they're on timeout.

My first car was a '64 VW bug I bought for $100. I loved that car! It stalled a bit, but I would get out, push it, and hop back in to jump start. I loved the simplicity of the engine and maintenance. One day I was stopped at a red light when a big fecking Impala smashed into us. The emergency response team had trouble getting me out of the car as I was apparently screeching about needing to get the beetle home to care for it. They finally coaxed me out to take a look at the car. Half of it was scrunched metal. And they convinced me to accept an ambulance ride to the hospital. I recovered, the bug did not. The settlement with the two bank employees who destroyed my beloved car, and my life for awhile, ultimately helped me to complete my higher education. I wrote a poem about Wilbur, my little blue car (may it rest in peace), but will spare you the details.

1968 Dodge Coronet station wagon, handed down from my parents to my brother to me. It was huge and had those cool fold down seats in the way back that came in handy for a quick trip over the state line into LA for Coors by the case. I paid for gas and clothes with the mark-up on re-selling the beer back here, where it was illegal to sell or possess. We sold the car for $300 when my grandmother bought me a Toyota Celica, still in my top 5 favorite cars I've ever owned. My dad found out several months later that the guy who bought it turned around and immediately re-sold it for $1000. All of the insignia, interior and exterior, were applied upside down and that apparently made it more special to somebody. It was just an irritant to all of us because of the logo on the steering wheel.

My first car was a 1967 Impala - red, four door and a tank. Two days after I got my license it was forecast to snow, my parents let me drive to school anyway. It was an adventure getting home after school let out early due to snow but we all made it home safely. I was too young to be scared.I wasn't a beer drinker but I can remember driving to a drive-thru beer distributor in East Oak Lane (just over the Philly line near my suburban high school) to buy beer for my friends, still dressed in my Catholic high school uniform.
