The grey "imgwidth=" button is fifth from the left above your post a reply window. Right after the = sign, if you'll put a number, no more than 600, your pictures will all fit on the page. If you want to see how it looks, hit quote on this post and study the coding as fixed for the second and third pictures.

This is as likely as Montana being invaded by Uruguay.

I was looking at this thread and saw the photo in Bob Ross’s post of the Enola Gay. So of course, (“Squirrel”) I thought of my dad who was a B17 flight engineer and top turret gunner in WWII. So I started Googeling, and maybe the third link I clicked on I spotted a picture that I’d never seen before taken in 1942, and my eye fell right to the second face on the left. Unquestionably the most handsomest man that ever lived, my dad (and if he were still alive he would be happy to verify that fact for you).

During his time there he was shot down twice. Bailing the first time, and riding her down the second. Half of his squadron was lost by the time they came home, but he came home a hero.

He was 24 years old in that photo. And even if he would be happy to say so himself, he really was a handsome man.

The thing that makes finding this (new to me) photo today so special is that it was 25 years ago today that my dad died. I still miss him as much today as I ever did.

My dad was really cool and just about every memory I have of him I see his face smiling and happy.

I love you daddy!

Thanks Bob for the squirrel moment. It led me to a real treasure.

THAT ... is AWESOME, MsDaisy.

What a photo. The camaraderie and self-assurance and trust in each others' competence just leaps out at you.

Thank you, that makes my day.

What a cool find Ms Daisy!!! The google can be an amazing tool. Your Dad was truly a handsome guy! My dad was a navigator and bombardier on a B-24 Liberator, but he never went overseas. Most of his squadron went to Europe, but I can't remember why my Dad didn't go. He died 19 years ago and I still miss him terribly, so I know where you're coming from. There are still a few B-17's flying around the country for air shows. If you get a chance to go see the inside of one, take it, because they're amazing.

Amazing how these things happen.

I recently Googled one of my hometowns, Blomfield, Indiana. In the Wikipedia article is my great-grandfather, in the center of this picture.

HA! Very cool! So he was a State Police officer or maybe the chief? Love the straw hats. Why did men give up wearing hats? - ball caps don't count and do most men's looks a disservice, IMO.

My dad also was a B-24 navigator-bombardier. I have his wings. We always said that he fought the Battle of Texas, because his training ended shortly after the war. Actually, they were supposed to go to Europe, but by then the war was winding down, so they pulled them back into training for the Pacific.

He died 5 years ago, and I miss him a lot, too.

Some of my dad's training was in Mountain Home, Idaho, during the winter. He marveled at having been ok in the cold in his leather jacket up in Idaho then freezing back in the Bay Area! It's a dryer cold there in Idaho is what I'm guessing. There is one B-24 operational that flies around the country too. The companion B 17 it traveled with crashed a few weeks ago somewhere in the midwest. I went inside it when it was on the tarmac, They had the bomb bay door open and that plane is mostly bomb storage, there was a 6-8" wide cat walk from the front of the plane to the back. Grease everywhere. I really don't know what squadron he was in, but could be my Dad knew your Dad, that would be cool!

I think he was just a deputy. His primary career was with the railroad.

The crashed B-17 was the Liberty Belle. I was able to see it about ten years ago and go on board. It was way smaller than I was expecting, almost tiny considering. The cockpit especially, didn't really look large enough to hold two people.

After they retired, my folks bought a house across the street from an airport. Many years ago it was the original airport for the city, but now it's a general aviation field. One day about 10 years ago, my dad looked out the window and there was a B-24 across the street, so they went over and visited the plane.

This week, I found his memoir about it that he wrote for us kids. The navigator-bombadier did double duty as a gunner, when necessary. He was trained as a waist gunner, and the thing they had to watch out for was that they didn't shoot off their own tail in the excitement. He wasn't able to serve as a gunner in the top turret and he showed my mother why -- his shoulders were too wide to fit through the opening.

I didn't find any notes about going up to Idaho for training, and I'm sure he would have told us about it. He'd grown up in Tampa, FL since he was 3 years old, and had never seen snow until he went to college in NC. We heard about all the snakes and scorpions in TX, so I'm sure we would have heard about the cold.
