As I said I got a bout a 5 month feral living around here somewhere. The cat's chances of being socialized with humans decreases every day.
Mr.B, my Gracie, who I believe was feral before she chose my house, although she might just have escaped from someone who didn't care enough to feed her properly, was about 5 months when she claimed me. I thought she was just a baby, but the vet said she was malnourished. She's a purry little thing, doesn't like to be held, but loves getting pets, sitting in laps in the winter and snuggling under the covers, with people but more with my pug.
Don't give up on him.
Ditto. I have two semi-feral cats, the offspring of their feral mom who brought them to my patio area when they were a few days old. Their brother, the sick one of the litter, was handled enough to become socialized while I was having him pumped full of antibiotics and vitamins, and he became my big (16#) insider, Brownie. But I couldn't give Creamy and Spacehat away when they were kittens because they were never socialized and would hide when anyone came around to see them. As a result, they still live in my patio.
Creamy is still very skittish of people, although often she sleeps on the cat shelf outside my window. The screen is enough to make her feel safe and her brother Brownie will lie against her through the screen.
But a few years ago, when he was about 2, Spacehat broke his leg and couldn't run away from me. I made a nice place on the outdoor couch for him, with a concrete block to use as a step up and down, and I also got some pain meds from the vet (good stuff - morphine-based elixir delivered by a dropper). Twice a day, I'd go out there to put his food down and, since he couldn't run away quickly, I'd sit on the couch next to him, give him a little squirt of pain medicine, and pet him.
Pretty soon, he was
really looking forward to my visits. He didn't even struggle to get up - instead, he'd roll over to get his belly scritched, and purr. He's all healed up now, and from that experience, developed a whole different attitude about people. He's now a friendly, talkative guy who loves his bellyscritches and catnip parties.
