Re: Fire!

:grouphug: To those who are living through it right now, THIS IS the worst one, ever. We do not quite know about the fires that Noah experienced. The great flood might have been a benign deities’ way of putting out multiple large fires. Or maybe not as that piles assumptions upon assumptions.

As horrible as this all sounds, we've had it much worse. The Thomas Fire is not yet on the list of the 20 worst California wildfires by acreage consumed.
The great fear of some climate scientists is that this will happen every summer.

Re: Congressional Ethics Committees: Sexual Harassment Investigations

I had thought (with some surprise) that Franken is a smart man. Sexual aggression seems not to be correlated with intelligence. It is a matter of dominance.

CA has world renowned climate scientists. Has any of them expressed the possibility that climate change has produced the new normal: months with no rain?

Is there any way for me to spend the rest of my life working on real conservation programs? I need no salary thanks to the universities of Michigan and Connecticut, unless I am required in Ann Arbor or Ann Arbor or Boston or San Francisco? I would need an intern.

When we get a rational and responsible president and Senate into office, can any of Drumpf’s and Zinke’s actions be reversed?

Re: Trump - POTUS Tweets and Social Media

Can you conceive of the NYT starting a story President Obama began his first Thanksgiving vacation in office with an early morning Twitter rage in which he again vented about some of his favorite targets: sports figures he thinks have defied him. No you cannot conceive of such a sentence. Nor are yo...

Re: Democrats Behaving Badly

Now that more is coming out, I'm taking a wait-and-see approach. I'm not defending him but, after seeing the new videos and the photog saying it was staged, it sounds like it's at least plausible a hit was planned. That said, it doesn't excuse Franken's poor judgement re: the photo. He's smarter th...

Jez, it is impossible to make gumbo without a roux, the darker the better. I would investigate your roommate’s origins. She may be from northern LA, where nothing is Cajun.

Re: Hijack this thread

I have never had Lutefisk made from shark, so far as I know. It worries me a bit: several species of shark are at risk or endangered, principally due to the Chinese hankering for shark fin soup. I have had many soups that I preferred. I loved turtle soup when it was available.

Re: Hijack this thread

Garrison Keillor once did a report from Lake Wobegon on the miraculous recovery of an old hunting dog. I cannot replicate the tone or cadence Garrison used, so here is a flat summary. The diagnosis was grim and the prognosis dire for the Olsen’s beloved old dog. It was Lutefisk-eating season, and Mr...

The only truly impressive thing about him is, he's an asshole on so many more levels than anyone I've ever heard of before. Oh, did I just end a sentence with TWO prepositions? Gold star for the day! But you know what I mean. Other famous assholes were so limited in their assholery. Foggy, if you h...

Re: Hijack this thread

When I was a kid we shared a Hot Tamale cook with some other families, enough to keep her in her rural unpainted house on a hill. An African-American, she made far better tamales than any local restaurant. It was always fun to get in the postwar Chevrolet, load in the Boston Terrier, and make our wa...

Re: What are you reading lately?

My reference is to a book that I found completely surprising; Origin by Dan Brown. That is, Dan Brown of DaVinci Code and other anti-Catholic books. Here the villain is a real, wealthy, and powerful schismatic entity.

Brown really needs to write about evangelicals and fundamentalists.

Re: Weather Alerts

First, the MIQ: why are there finches darting about my home? Did somebody give the wrong signal? Or maybe do they know more than I do.

There is a thin, spotty film of something white my yards. I think it is frozen dew or remnants of a light rain. Not snow, pretty please.

A book that is a total surprise to me. I never expected to have tears streaming down my cheeks in a book by this author. I think he is growing up. One hint :Barcelona and Sagrada Familia.
