Re: Mueller's investigation of Trump

I'm sorry, but I'm done apologizing for or tiptoeing around that. IMO you are comparing a traffic ticket with armed robbery. Of course I am not a lawyer and haven't been designated to be on the Supreme Court one day. :- With the exception of this thread, where there's (IMO) a parallel between the e...

Re: Mueller's investigation of Trump

And thus, the "But Hillary's Emails" poison continues its nefarious "whataboutism" work. No, and to be blunt I'm getting tired of that line. It simultaneously dismisses and belittles anyone who has concerns about the emails, without deigning to actually address the concerns on the merits. In this p...

Re: Mueller's investigation of Trump

Regarding Hillary's emals: 1: Her work emails weren't hers. They were the US government's. 2: Therefore, her work emails weren't hers to delete. They were supposed to be preserved as both legal and historical records. 3: She was the one who chose to use her private server for official business. 4: T...

Re: Mueller's investigation of Trump

I would point out that, by this exact same reasoning, Hillary committed obstruction by deleting her allegedly personal emails. Only no one gave her the rope. Except (a) the emails were on her own property, not the government'f servers, (b) she had her lawyers go through her emails to separate out t...

I'm seeing the argument made that the emails were private and not subject to FOIA.
What Dan said.

Too, also, because the emails were private (and not subject to preservation as Presidential records), any privilege claims based on aspects of executive privilege are bullshit.

Re: Gavin Seim

I think there are a lot of misconceptions about copyright, both on Gavin's part and (to a lesser extent) in this thread. (For example, placing footage of four different games in a production gives all four companies a potential copyright claim.) If there's interest and someone wants to start another...

I studied engineering, so forgive the stupid question - but that means they have evidence of premeditation, correct ? My layman's understanding is that premeditation can take place in moments. It doesn't have to be planned a certain amount of time in advance. I'm sure the lawyers can probably expla...

It's a dog whistle to his young earth creationist compatriots. Materialism gets used as a shorthand for any acceptance of scientific explanations for the universe.

If she's been barred from the premises, making her last day January 20th seems likely to be intended to let her keep her tax break. I'm not an expert in this area, but that strikes me as problematic at best, and enabling tax avoidance at worst.

As CS Lewis wrote, You are a Child of God and a Son of Adam, which is enough of an honour to raise the head of the lowest beggar, and enough of a shame to bow the head of the mightiest Emperor. Great quote. Pratchett had a variant on the same theme, which I'm also fond of - he referred to human as ...

Here's the latest surprise - it turns out that Roy may not be able to get a recount if the margin is greater than 0.5%, even if he's able and willing to pay for it. The laws that cover candidate-requested recounts don't seem to apply to elections to federal office . (I looked up the relevant statut...

Re: House Oversight: Trump Sexual Misconduct

The idea that punishing someone for sexual misconduct would somehow only be of benefit to the victims is simply incomprehensible to me. In fact, it's very nearly as incomprehensible as the idea that the harm caused by the sexual assaults is that the victims are "deeply offended."

Priscilla Duncan, the lead plaintiff in the case, noted with some amazement that the secretary of state’s protest was lodged with the supreme court at 4.38pm and the justices came back with their ruling at 5.18pm. “It’s just unbelievable that they examined the pleadings and got eight judges to conc...

3 years, actually. The election is for the remainder of Session's term, which doesn't run out until Jan 2021.

But I agree that the seat will most likely be a R pickup then.

It currently shows Jones at 80%, down from 90% just 10 seconds ago. It can fluctuate (due to the relatively limited data and the uncertainty in its modeling). But it was painfully accurate last year; folks around me were all celebrating Clinton's inevitable win until I showed them NYT's site. Well,...

Re: Alabama US Senate: Special Election December 12, 2017

I hope it's not premature. And no recount, all right? Please. Shouldn't be premature. There aren't any red counties left to count, and Jones is ahead in real numbers, so even if rest of blue county vote somehow goes 50/50 instead of being 66%+ Jones, he still wins. Final margin should be well over ...
